Why Devon Alexander is one of the greatest boxers of all time

Devon Alexander had one fitting nickname: The Great. It was short, simple - like Alexander The Great, get it? - and above all, accurate. Because Devon Alexander was great. In fact, he’s one of the greatest boxers of all time.
Devon Alexander looked like the next big thing in boxing as he built up an impressive 21-0 record, 13 via knockout. That included a big TKO over Juan Urango to retain the WBC light welterweight title and win the IBF light welterweight strap.
While not the biggest power puncher, Devon Alexander possessed tremendous skill, as well as speed and overall athletic ability. He was also an extremely adept defensive boxer who was capable of making his opponents miss, which then set him up for counter-punching.
That skill inevitably drew comparisons to arguably the greatest of all time, Floyd Mayweather Jr. Devon Alexander was being touted as potentially the future pound-for-pound and Pay-Per-View king after Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao finally faded away from the boxing game.
Devon Alexander eventually earned himself a fight with another undefeated American, Timothy Bradley. However, that fight did not go as planned as Devon Alexander lost a technical decision after a clash of heads that made him unable to continue the fight by the ringside doctor’s estimation.
But while some unfairly branded Devon Alexander a quitter after that fight, he did anything but. He got knocked down in his next fight against Lucas Matthysse but recovered to get the win. He would go on to win his next four fights, including a big one against Marcos Maidana.
Unfortunately, that would end up being Devon Alexander’s last winning streak as he went on to lose six of his last nine fights, with two wins and a draw. Although, he likely should have had one win more after dominating Victor Ortiz in the fight that was scored a majority draw.
That fight underscored Devon Alexander’s tremendous skill and determination, which led him to the top of the boxing game and allowed him to make his mark as one of the greatest boxers of all time.
