Diversity runs well in the WNBA. People from all sorts of ethnicities and cultural backgrounds have found themselves playing in the pinnacle of women's basketball. Another factor in this diversity is people's sexual and gender identities. So, it comes to no one's surprise that a lot of these stars are also part of the LGBT community. How many are there and which stars identify as gay?
There are about 37 active players in the WNBA who identify as gay. This means that about 24% of the league belongs in the LGBT community. In fact, a lot of stars in the league are open about their identity and fans all across the globe have found them as proper idols to look up to in order to keep being motivated despite the heaps of prejudice stacked against them.
DeWanna Bonner, Kahleah Cooper, Chelsea Gray, Brittney Griner, Jonquel Jones, Jewell Lloyd, NaLyssa Smith, Breanna Stewart, Diana Taurasi, Alyssa Thomas, Courtney Vandersloot, and Courtney Williams have all expressed a gender identity that falls into being part of the LGBT. This has not hampered the way they play in the WNBA at all too.
The WNBA is big on diversity and inclusion. With a huge chunk of the league identifying with the LGBT community, they have been able to properly represent how women's ball is played all across the world regardless of creed, culture, and identity. This number will only also grow over time because of the league's pace of growth. Truly, it is a wonderful sight to behold that a lot of these players and teams accept themselves for who they are.
