For more than 60 years, Jerry and Eugenia "Gene" Jones have been the quintessential power couple, forging an unbreakable partnership that has helped shape the Dallas Cowboys and influenced sports ownership at its highest stratum. Theirs is a tale of steadfast devotion, mutual admiration, and a common objective that has stood the test of time.
A Lifelong Connection through a Random Encounter
Their path starts in the early 1960s when a young Jerry Jones, then at the University of Arkansas, met Eugenia "Gene" Chambers Holmes, a hometown Razorback beauty queen. But it was this chance meeting that would change them forever. "Because we went to the county fair and all of these boys slamming baseballs at little dolls trying to knock them down for what, a teddy bear, and Jerry wasn't getting much luck with that," said Gene during an interview with WFAA. "He then slipped away and returned a few moments later, holding the largest teddy bear at the fair and sporting an even larger grin. He went around the back and purchased me a teddy bear. We did; we married three years later, which was the start of our relationship."
Building an Empire
As the 1989 NFL was on the verge of kicking off, Jerry Jones took a gamble that would define him as one of the league's most powerful figures. The Cowboys were a struggling franchise when he bought them for a record $140 million. With Gene at his side, Jerry set out to make the Cowboys a worldwide empire, bringing together his winning touch as an entrepreneur and her vision for marketing and outreach.
Love emphasized the Jones family's focus on community service: "One contact with a single individual member of our organization can touch and help hundreds and possibly thousands more," Jerry once said. He has turned the Cowboys into a global brand and social entity with tangible community outreach so that not only Lancaster but other areas across our country can benefit from his leadership.
Off the field, Jones and his siblings, Charlotte Anderson and Jerry Jr., are all keys to their family business with the Cowboys. The Dallas Morning News quoted Cowboys chief operating officer Stephen Jones as saying, "Talk about the greatest gift my mom and dad Jerry and Gene gave me is time on the job." I have loved them for it, always." That family model has been a cornerstone of the Jones style, which promotes cooperation and common cause throughout an organization.
Overcoming Challenges
The couple's relationship has had many bumps in the road, but they always get through it because they have each other's back every step of the way while working towards making their dreams come true. Between Jerry's 2015 health scare, during which he was forced to get a new hip following surgeries for dramatic weight loss gone wrong, and the current paternity claim, the pair has weathered it all publicly, with style.
As Jerry Jones has said, "The star on the helmet can move mountains." They're not only aware of this but trust that they can do something significant with their platform. Their commitment to offset the family's impact on this planet has not only been contagious within their own family but also an example shining for everyone else.
A Love Affair for the Ages
Their dedication to the best interest of every player on the team and its business ventures has made the Dallas Cowboys an unqualified success, transforming a small circular hot dog stand called "Dallas Cowboys" into a nationwide money-spinning franchise that extends beyond just sports.
This legacy is sure to be amongst the testimony that forever galvanizes generations, a testament to what can come from concerted purpose and unwavering dedication through respect born out of mutual understanding.
