The McCaffrey name has quickly become one of the most significant football dynasties in recent memory. With several brothers in the NFL, however, they are a proud American sports family carrying forward its rich athletic tradition to new generations.
Central to this legacy of football are the four McCaffrey brothers, Max, Christian, Dylan, and Luke, who have all etched their places in NFL history. On record-breaking performances from both a player and coaching standpoint, the McCaffreys collectively exhibited the deep talent and motivation they have in their blood.
Max McCaffrey
Max McCaffrey, the oldest of four brothers and a former NFL player with practice squad, stops in Oakland, Green Bay, and New Orleans before playing for two years in San Antonio under his father Ed's watch at Ralston Valley High after college.
Max was undrafted from college and signed with the Oakland Raiders in 2016 as a wide receiver. While he never found himself permanently on a roster, Max's grit and background as a Swiss army knife allowed him to bounce around several practice squads, such is the case for Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, Jacksonville Jaguars, and most recently, San Francisco 49ers.
Max McCaffrey returned to the NFL in 2023 as an offensive assistant with the Miami Dolphins. His experience coming up through the ranks as a player and his football intelligence have provided significant value to Minnesota's coaching staff, guiding, in particular, young future NFL stars.
Christian McCaffrey
Christian is the most famous of the McCaffrey siblings, blossoming into one of the NFL's best offensive players. Picked 8th overall by the Carolina Panthers, McCaffrey immediately burst onto the scene with his electrifying playmaking skills and versatile skillset.
Christian set multiple team records during his time with the Panthers, most notably setting a mark for all-purpose yards in 2019 when he ran and caught for 2,392 of them, second only to Chris Johnson's single-season NFL record. His excellence in both a rushing and receiving capacity proved to be an absolute nightmare for defenses around the league, earning him Pro Bowl bids during 2019, 2022, and 2023.
Christian was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 2022 and did not disappoint on a larger stage. Christian scored during his Super Bowl debut, but the 49ers lost against the Kansas City Chiefs. While they did not host a victory, Christian's outing certainly wrapped up his standing as one of the top offensive weapons in the league.
Dylan McCaffrey
Christian has etched a name for himself at the next level as a running back, but his little brother Dylan is making waves in the NFL world. Before the 2018 season, Dylan decommitted and enrolled at Michigan only to serve as a backup for Shea Patterson.
He lost a quarterback competition at Michigan and decided to transfer for one final chance, now with his father Ed coaching him in Northern Colorado. During his two years at Northern Colorado, Dylan showed off a big arm and overall solid mobility, passing for over 3,200 yards with 17 touchdowns, not counting another four on the ground, and rushing for an additional 378 yards.
After going undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft, Dylan's college dominance has paid off, and he can carry that onto the pro ranks. He participated in the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine to try and impress scouts and get an offer to make an NFL roster.
Luke McCaffrey
The youngest of the McCaffrey brothers, Luke has excelled at exhibiting his football versatility collegiately. Originally a quarterback at the University of Nebraska, Luke transferred to Rice University, where he played both wide receiver and defensive back.
While at Rice, Luke added to his versatility by showing that he could make plays as a receiver and leave defenders in the dust while lining up out of the backfield. His showing at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, where he narrowly edged out his brother Christian's 40-yard dash time, has only further solidified him as a dynamic offensive weapon in waiting.
How the McCaffrey Family Changed the NFL
No set of brothers has left a bigger mark in NFL history than the McCaffrey family. Their triumph and determination have inspired their household and gripping football followers nationwide.
Ultimately, the McCaffreys is a tale of grit and grime with an undying love for the game that is in their blood. That multi-generational athletic prowess established the McCaffreys as one of football's premier families in recent history, prompting a new generation to follow their lead.
