To many, Dan Marino is one of the top quarterbacks in NFL history. During his illustrious seventeen years with the Miami Dolphins, he recorded a series of impressive achievements that secured him in the annals and archives.
In addition to his many accomplishments on the field, Dan Marino and his wife Claire had one of the most beautiful lives together. The two previously met in college at the University of Pittsburgh, where Dan was a star quarterback for the Panthers.
Claire, a Pittsburgh area native, was studying communications at Pitt when she met Dan. They hit it off and began courting one another, eventually growing into a lifelong union. Despite Dan's rising NFL career pressures, they remained connected and anchored to each other as a married couple in 1985.
The Marinos' Family Life
As Dan's football career ended, family became his focus. They had six kids together: Daniel Charles, Michael Joseph, Joseph Donald, Alexandra Claire Niki Lin, and Lia. Raising a big family while Dan's career was winding down but still capable of landing him in the Hall of Fame is not an easy balancing act, yet they managed to do so gracefully and purposefully.
Marino said, "Claire's steadfast devotion to our children, in turn, empowered me to chase my dreams on the field." The Marino home was always abuzz with the laughter and activity of a large family, and she provided an anchor for their children.
Community/Philanthropy
In addition to their family life, Dan and Claire Marino have been actively involved in philanthropy and community services for many years. The Dan Marino Foundation was established in 1992 and has since become a non-profit organization that works towards the development and welfare of citizens with autism, other developmental disabilities, etc.
The foundation has raised millions of dollars for research, education, and support programs and is today one of the largest funding mechanisms in the autism community. "Throughout the entirety of my own life, giving back has always been a core value," said Claire Marino. "Dan's platform is something we wanted to use to make a positive change for those less fortunate this Christmas."
The Marinos' philanthropy reaches beyond the Dan Marino Foundation. They have supported numerous other causes, from children's hospitals to educational programs and disaster assistance. For the majority of their marital bliss, they have shared a commitment to giving back and creating change.
Life After Football
Dan Marino retired from the NFL in 2000, and Dan and Claire entered a different chapter of life with just as much excitement. For so long, Dan's career in football was the center of everything for them, but they were now looking to different opportunities and aspects of their lives away from the sport.
From there, he went on to join the Miami Dolphins front office as a consultant, where he still serves today. Claire, meanwhile, has thrown herself into charity work, serving as a board member for the Dan Marino Foundation and other charitable organizations.
