The Green Bay Packers have their defense set after they extended veteran Kenny Clark. However, Matt LaFleur might not be so set for the future given that they have not offered Jordan Love a new deal. The signal-caller has been notably absent from training camp and a lot of fans are getting worried about this holdout. Brian Gutekunst noted that they want him to be on the field as soon as possible.
Jordan Love’s contract with the Packers is set to expire by the end of their 2024 campaign. Understandably, the young quarterback wants some certainty when it comes to his future. So, he is holding out from participating in their training camp such that they craft a new contract for him.
Due to this, Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt have taken on primary quarterback duties. Brian Gutekunst and the rest of the Packers front office do not seem to be worried about the situation. The general manager expressed his understanding toward the signal caller and even gave an update on his contract status, via AP News
“We certainly understand where he’s coming from. We’d like him to be out there. It’s important for him to be out there. Obviously you guys know how important practice is, and working with his teammates. But as of now, until we get that resolved, he will not be practicing,” he added.
Some experts have begun to expect that Love’s new contract with the Packers would span four years. Moreover, they also predict that it would cost Gutekunst and LaFleur a fairly hefty $224 million throughout that span of time. While those figures are eye-popping, the Packers front office is working on a deal that would get their quarterback motivated but also retain the squad’s financial flexibility.
“This is just part of it, not unexpected. We’ll work to get it done, and hopefully, he won’t miss too much time. We’ve got a lot of work to do. We think we have a very good football team, but we’ve got to come together as a team, and he’s a big part of that. So him being out there is important for us. We’ll get there,” he concluded.
Will a deal be reached before the preseason commences?
