Justin Herbert has been the starting quarterback for the Los Angeles Chargers ever since his rookie season in 2020.
Herbert had big shoes to fill after taking over for Philip Rivers who left the team in 2019 who played 16 seasons with the team.
Ever since Herbet has taken over as the team’s starting quarterback it has been an up-and-down experience. The Chargers have only made the playoffs once with Herbert in 2022 and they suffered a devastating loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the wild card round.
Despite not winning a playoff game yet, the Chargers still paid Herbert handsomely for his services. In 2023, the team awarded Herbert with a five-year $262.5 million contract.
Before his extension, Herbert was still on his rookie contract which was four-years for $26.6 million.
For the 2024 season, Herbert has a base salary of $6 million and has a significant signing bonus of $51 million. It’s unclear what his net worth is for the 2024 season, but it’s estimated $25 million.
While most of Herbert’s salary comes from his contract with the Chargers, he also gets a significant amount of his income from endorsement deals.
Herbert currently deals with several huge brands such as Nike, Bose, Head & Shoulders, Subway, Chipotle, eSports and Fedex. Herbert also signed a multi-year deal with Sofi, the sponsor of the Chargers home stadium,
Other endorsement brands that Herbert is linked with includes Callaway Golf, Dr. Squatch, Fanatics, Panini and Verizon. Herbert’s endorsement contracts have contributed $11 million to his annual NFL salary.
Herbert’s contract and endorsements have made him one of the more highly prolific quarterbacks in the league and certainly one its most valuable quarterback. He’s made all of this money without winning a playoff game.
Herbert has only made one playoff appearance in his entire career and that game for Herbert is remembered for all of the wrong reasons. However, that fact might change this season.
After parting ways with head coach Brandon Staley, the Chargers hired recent national champion and former Michigan Wolverine head coach Jim Harbough.
Since Harbough’s arrival, the Chargers are currently 6-3 after nine games season and Herbert has been stellar.
Herbert has thrown 11 touchdown passes this season and has only one interception. He also thrown for 1,889 passing yards in nine starts.
His 2024 season is a massive improvement from his 2023 season, and for the Chargers as a whole. In 13 starts last year, Herbert went 5-8 as the team’s quarterback and had to miss the final few games of the season after breaking his index finger on his throwing hand against the Denver Broncos.
For a brief moment in time, it looked like the Chargers almost made a mistake extending Herbert. However, Herbert proved everyone wrong almost immediately and is having a rebound season in 2024.
The Chargers currently hold the sixth seed in the AFC and look to be heading for the playoffs baring a mid-season collapse.
