CJ Stroud slump, regression or the Texans?
CJ Stroud slump, regression or the Texans?

In his rookie year, CJ Stroud emerged as one of the NFL’s rising stars. In 2023 he was named to the all-rookie team, was named a pro bowler and won Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.
The Houston Texans have met expectations in 2024, they’re currently 6-3 and are first in the AFC South division. However, something is off about the 2024 Texans as they don’t have the same magic that they had last year.
While CJ stroud has played well this year, he has struggled a lot as of late. In two of his last three games Stroud has had a QB rating of less than 60. Those games were against the Packers and most recently against the Jets, Houston lost both games.
Stroud has had an underwhelming sophomore season, given how much hype was around him and the Texans after his electric rookie season. Has he already begun to regress? Probably not. Is he just in a slump right now? Most likely.
Stroud and the Texans have shown signs of struggle lately, they even had a hard time getting past the Colts.
While Stroud is currently in a slump, the blame isn’t all on him. In their recent matchup against the Jets, Stroud went 11/30 for 191 passing yards. However, his pass protection was horrendous against New York.
The Texans surrendered eight sacks against the Jets, leaving Stroud to have almost no time to be able to throw the ball.
The o-line committed several offensive penalties that also wiped out big offensive plays from Texans running back Joe Mixon.
Stroud’s recent slump can also be attributed to missing wide receivers. The Texans are missing their top two receivers and Stroud has been relying on Tank Dell and Robert Woods.
Nico Collins has been out for a few weeks after suffering a hamstring injury and now Steffon Diggs is out for the season with a torn acl. It’s clear that Stroud is missing his favorite targets, but lucky for him Collins will return at some point in the season.
Stroud is clearly frustrated with himself and the team’s performance over the last couple weeks. Stroud has urged his team that it’s time to take accountability and be better as a football team.
“We just have to play football better, execute better, stop pointing fingers, and realize that at the end of the day, this is not winning football,” Stroud told reporters. “We can’t keep squeezing by every game. We have a lot of talent on this team, and once we fully buy into the systems and what’s being coached, we can reach our potential.”
Stroud and the Texans are in a bit of a limbo right now with the holes in the o-line and the injuries are really hurting this team right now.
The Texans will have to withstand another injury problem and this time to their o-line. Starting guard Kenyon Green suffered a season ending shoulder injury in the team’s Thursday night loss to the New York Jets.
