The New Orleans Saints have made the decision to fire their head coach Dennis Allen amidst a seven game losing streak.
A great start
The Saints got off to a phenomenal start, going 2-0 and blowing out both the Carolina Panthers and Dallas Cowboys. It looked like New Orleans might have finally clicked something into place. Derek Carr and Alvin Kamara were playing well, and the defense looked strong.
Falling apart
The Saints lost a close game to the Eagles in week three to fall to 2-1. That was followed by another close loss to the Falcons. Then a loss to the Chiefs in which Derek Carr was injured. More losses followed without Derek Carr, as Spencer Rattler struggled and lost to the Bucs, Chargers, and Broncos.
Still, there was reason to hold back criticism. All six of the Saints losses were against teams with winning records, and without Carr, how could they be expected to win?
The last straw
The last straw for Dennis Allen was likely the Saints 23-22 loss to the Carolina Panthers. As his defense allowed Bryce Young (who was already benched once this season) to march down the field for a game winning drive, it became clear Allen was the problem, and needed to go.
A rough stint
Allen's two-and-a-half year stint with New Orleans was not inspiring. The Saints failed to make the playoffs, with a combined record of 18-25. He used four starting QB's, including Jameis Winston, Andy Dalton, Derek Carr and Spencer Rattler. Carr performed the best of the four, with a record of 11-12, while Rattler performed the worst, failing to win any of his three starts.
