Softball is a sport that has existed for such a long time. A lot of regulations and innovations have been implemented in the game which has greatly increased the talent of those playing it. Techniques in pitching have greatly varied over time and some have reached the absolute peak of it. Case in point, the fastest pitch ever recorded still has not been topped for over 12 years.
Monica Abbott holds the record for the fastest pitch ever thrown in a professional softball game. It happened on the 16th of July in 2012 when the Chicago Bandits and Carolina Diamonds played each other. The Bandits pitcher chucked the ball straight into the catcher with a speed of an absurd 77 miles per hour. Since then, no one has been able to top this accomplishment.
To put how insane this is to perspective, the average range for a softball pitch clocks in at 60 to 65 miles per hour. Abbott's pitch was clearly off the charts but she did not get it without help. She was able to learn the techniques of other pitchers around the world during her stint with the Toyota Red Terriers in the Japanese Softball League.
It comes to no one's surprise that Abbott also got a lot of international acclaim while playing for Team USA. In fact, she has pitched for the Star-Spangled Banner for the Olympics which was a momentous occasion for her career. As of the moment, she has already stepped down from playing professional softball but her indelible mark on the sport will always be remembered.
