Sammy Sosa: A Case for Induction into the MLB Hall of Fame

During the "Steroid Era" in baseball, Sammy Sosa was perhaps the most well-known slugger and celebrated figure, but the embattled slugger been shrouded in controversy and subject to debate regarding his Hall of Fame eligibility.

In this Fan Arch feature, we'll cover how the steroid era studies affected Sosa, point out his dominance in that era, and lastly take a look at the numbers through an objective lens and see why we should push to get Sosa into the Hall of Fame.

The Steroid Era and its Effects on Sosa

The "Steroid Era" first dirtied the news in baseball with PEDs and the use of them by many players, Sosa included.

Although Sosa never officially admitted using steroids, his career has been tarnished with allegations of performance enhancing drugs.

That era documented a transformational change in attitude of by-standers, evolving public distrust, suspiciousness, and self–provincialism. But it's also important to consider that the damage from the steroid era was not confined to those in uniform, but instead reverberates throughout the entirety of the sport of baseball.

Sosa's Dominance and Impact

While the steroid era still looms greatly around his legacy due to the many ups and down that has been reported since, it's important to realize that with or without PEDs, Sosa was a truly great player and ultimately one of the highest impact players in his era.

Sosa's easy way with power captured audiences everywhere.

He was closely identified with the sport and captivated baseball fans — never more so than during his historic chase of McGwire in the race to the most home runs in one season in 1998.

Upon examining Sosa's career numbers, it's clear he was pretty good player and an important figure in the game.

Not to mention his 609 HRs, which puts him at 9th in MLB history, just a testament to his power and offensive abilities. His tendency to fill the stat sheet and win over the hearts of fans on a consistent basis further cements his basketball legacy, as well.

Even with the steroid era over his head, Sosa's numbers are too substantial to ignore, and he has a good shot at the Hall of Fame.

A Future-Forward Hall of Fame Approach

Given the controversy still attached to ballot stuffing and steroid-era holdout voters, it's critical to take a more enlightened view that accounts for the full value of players like Sosa.

Establishing a criteria by which players who played during the so called steroid era could be retroactively inducted, the committee voting could be a first real way to get a fair read on a steroid era player's inclusion.

That standard would provide flexibility to weigh the votes of players like Sosa, who were widely suspected of using PEDs but, like Alessandro, insisted under oath that they had used them unknowingly and never tested positive, and therefore could provide a more complete and fair assessment.

Embracing the Sosa Legacy

Yes, the steroid era hangs like a cloud over the game, but we cannot forget the influence that stars like Sosa had.

The records that were unbelievably recorded by Sosa and his dominance makes him deserving candidate to be inducted in the MLB Hall of Fame.

If further evidence is needed about how the game has developed, then its important to remember that it has always sought to be as progressive as possible, and in examining how we honor the contributions of players from the past to the present, we ensure that we can move forward as one, in a unified fashion.
