The fight at the Hungaroring took fans back to what it was like back in the 2021 World Drivers’ Championship. While it was no longer a battle for P1 because of how fast the McLaren’s pace has been, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton left it all on the track. It has been a long while since these two have gone at each other’s throats for a podium finish. It was an intense last set of laps to determine who would be on the last step alongside Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Lewis Hamilton was having a flying lap into Turn 1 of the Hungaroring. However, Max Verstappen — with all the intention to overtake his rival from Mercedes — had locked up his wheels in the middle of the turn. As a consequence, Hamilton’s W15 got his front right tire hit. The Red Bull driver and 2024 World Drivers’ Championship leader also came flying off the ground along with his RB19.
Clearly, the seven-time world champion was not pleased with how the incident turned out. Even Nico Rosberg, his former Mercedes teammate and 2016 World Drivers’ Champion, agreed with the British driving legend. He posits that the Dutch champion should have maneuvered and adapted in Turn 1.
Hamilton outlined his dismay after the Hungarian Grand Prix, via Jamie Woodhouse of Planet F1.
“I mean, from what I can remember, obviously we passed a backmarker. I got to the braking zone, and then Max appeared, to overtake the car behind me, so I moved over to defend. I left enough room inside, but Max locked up, and he was going a different trajectory to me. I was going towards, around the corner, and he came shooting across,” the Silver Arrows great said.
Hamilton ended up with P3 and managed to continue Mercedes’ Hungarian Grand Prix streak. However, the incident with Verstappen clearly hampered his ability to gain some pace in the last laps of the race. He finished the race after lagging behind Lando Norris with a +14.880-second gap.
