Kyle Larson looked like he was going to finish outside the top 20 during the Brickyard 400 race. His veteran acumen kicked in and, with the help of his mastery of Hendrick Motorsports’ Chevrolet with the number 5 mark, he started an overtaking spree. Clearly, Rick Hendrick was at the edge of his seat with how the 26-year-old has been driving. The flashbacks of their Indianapolis 500 run also came to mind. In the end, they ended up back on the top step of the podium with 49 points.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has not been kind to Kyle Larson and Hendrick Motorsports before the Brickyard 400 race. He finished 18th in the Indianapolis 500 but, if not for a bottled strategy and poor car management, he could have finished within the top five. This return to Indy was the redemption that he needed and he could finally exorcise his demons that have been haunting him since late May.
Tyler Reddick’s #45 Toyota and Ryan Blaney’s #12 Ford gave him quite a headache in the final laps of the oval. But, it was to no avail. There was so much determination coursing through Larson’s veins at that point and he knew that it was his win to claim. Hendrick Motorsports’ vice chairman, Jeff Gordon, outlined what was at stake for Larson and why he gave his all, via Nathan Brown of the Indianapolis Star.
“It’s that kind of emotional place where so much is riding on it. There’s so much history here. When days like today happen, it just doesn’t feel any better as a competitor, and yet, when we weren’t able to get the finish there at the end of that race in May, it was a pretty big low. “I think that’s just Indianapolis. You’re pushing all the time, Sometimes, you’re pushing and you’re not going to get the results you’re hoping for. And days like today, you’re going to push, and you do,” Gordon said.
Larson is atop the NASCAR Cup standings with his four wins after the Brickyard 400. He netted this by getting 28 playoff points. Right behind him is Christopher Bell with 24 playoff points and Denny Hamlin who has scored 21 points so far.
