Three years ago, NASCAR decided to make races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway more exciting for fans. Instead of having the classic Brickyard 400 oval, they instead had a race course that ran for 200 miles. For 2024, the classic oval is making a return to celebrate three decades of cup racing in the state of Indiana. Austin Cindric, Brad Keselowski, and Chase Briscoe were all hyped up to learn that they would get to race on the iconic track.
Brad Keselowski noted how different it was to race on the Brickyard 400 track and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s race course. This 2018 winner of the event who is representing RFK Racing is just glad that NASCAR decided to go back to the race’s roots, per Michael Marot of AP News.
“I don’t think anyone considered the road course a crown jewel race, so it kind of returns back to that status. I think that’s huge for our sport and it means a lot to me as a driver and I’m assuming it does for the other drivers as well. So, a welcome return. For me, winning this race and having your name on that crown jewel list, it’s really special,” Keselowski said.
23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick echoed the same sentiment as Keselowski. He along with other drivers have longed for this return and his first run at the old track did not disappoint. Reddick’s practice lap clocked in at 182.582 miles per hour, which was the fastest among all participants.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for us to get back to that tradition. This is a really tricky race and there was an outcry for wanting to try something different. But I think it’s just the nature of Indianapolis, it desires perfection. If you want to win the race, you can’t make a mistake,” he declared.
Jeff Gordon still holds the record for most wins in this record. With the Brickyard 400’s return to NASCAR, will anyone be able to equal it by the next decade?
