Despite leading the World Drivers’ Championship ladder by 76 points, Max Verstappen had quite the struggle trying to get on the Hungarian Grand Prix podium. He was complaining to Red Bull Racing’s engineer Gianperio Lambiase during the whole race. Unfortunately, the two-time world champion’s temper got the best of him after his collision with Mercedes’ veteran champion, Lewis Hamilton.
In the latter laps of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton was going for a maneuver at Turn 1. Max Verstappen was closely following suit with his RB19 and intended to overtake the Mercedes legend. However, instead of making the move on Turn 1 of the Hungaroring, he locked his tires and ended up clipping Hamilton’s front right tire.
Immediately after the collision, Verstappen shouted: “He moved under braking!”
Lambiase then responded to the Red Bull driver, “I’m not even going to get into a radio fight with the other teams, Max. We’ll let the stewards do their thing. It’s childish on the radio. Childish.”
A lot of Red Bull Racing fans were worried about the squad’s chemistry after hearing this radio during the Hungarian Grand Prix. Christian Horner swooped in after the race wrapped up and calmed the heads of their faithful, via Henry Valantine of Planet F1.
“GP, I think at that point actually wasn’t referring to Max, I think he’s referring to others on the radio complaining about penalties. So, I don’t think GP’s reference at that point was in reference to Max. Others are obviously goading for penalties because obviously, the stewards are listening to the radio as well. They’ve been together for eight years, and there are things that we could have done better in the race today, but it’s something that we’ll talk about as a team. Max was frustrated, we can understand,” Horner declared.
Verstappen was clearly thrown off his pace after the incident with Hamilton. He ended up missing the podium and lagging behind Charles Leclerc to finish P5. While this is not at all a bad result, he underperformed under the standards of the RB19 given that he finished behind a gap of +21.349 seconds. Hopefully, Red Bull gets back on top by the Belgian Grand Prix.
