All physically organized team activities are in full swing for NFL squads. Shane Steichen is certainly one of those coaches who has full belief that his squad can jockey for a spot in the postseason. With Anthony Richardson ready to make a name for himself in his second year, that aspiration might just be realized. However, it looks like the Indianapolis Colts will be facing a setback because of Josh Downs’ injury.
Shane Steichen saw one of his top wide receivers go down during a seven-on-seven drill at Colts training camp. Josh Downs is currently enduring a high ankle sprain. This means that Anthony Richardson is set to miss his slot receiver for an estimated time of four to six weeks, per Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.
After seeing his rising weapon go down, Coach Steichen urged the rest of the Colts squad to be smart when they are taking down receivers. Obviously, he would not want anything like this to happen once again because their veteran pass catcher rotation is going to grow thin before the season even starts.
As of the moment, the leading candidate who might take over Downs’ role is Anthony Gould. The rookie could also likely share minutes with Ethan Fernea as he traverses how this role works in the little time they have left in Colts training camp. This does not derail the progress of Steichen’s aspirations to reach the postseason. However, their journey going there could be rough.
