The New York Giants are coming off another disappointing season: they had a record of 3-14, they finished fourth in the NFC East and they gave up on their 2019 first-round pick Daniel Jones.
Their 2024 season was so bad that they currently hold the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft and many experts predicted that the team would be drafting a quarterback in the first round.
With Cam Ward likely being the first overall pick, many believed that New York would select Shedeur Sanders to be their next franchise QB. However, a couple big free agent signings have likely changed the Giants outlook on the upcoming draft.
On March 22, the Giants signed former Cleveland Browns quarterback Jameis Winston to a two-year $8 million deal. Winston joined Tommy DeVito as the lone quarterbacks in an underwhelming Giants QB room.
New York didn’t stop there though, the team made another splash free agent signing by acquiring future hall of famer Russell Wilson. Wilson signed a one-year $10.5 million contract and is likely the favorite to be the team’s new starting quarterback.
Wilson has had some struggles the past few seasons, but the ten-time pro bowler is ready to revitalize his career once more in New York and he’ll have the benefit of having two solid targets: veteran Darius Slayton and young star Malik Nabers.
Wilson last played for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024, in 11 starts he managed to lead the team to the playoffs and was eventually eliminated in the Wild Card round by the Baltimore Ravens.
Wilson enters 2025 at 36-years-old and will be 37-years-old by the time the season ends. However, Wilson is a former champion and future hall of famer. Even if he can’t perform well his veteran leadership alone will be beneficial to the team.
Luckily for the Giants, they’ll have Winston and DeVito to fall back on in case Wilson continues to show signs of struggle in the latter part of his career.
The Giants also made some other key moves this offseason to address some holes they have on their roster and will continue to do so in this year’s draft. The team re-signed Slayton to a three-year extension to keep him and Nabers paired together.
Slayton even tweeted out “Giants country…Lets Ride,” after hearing that his team just signed Wilson. Slayton’s excitement over Wilson and the $36 million he’ll be making over the next three years will likely make him a fan favorite for Giants fans.
New York also signed former Miami Dolphins safety Jevon Holland to a three-year $45 million deal and also former New Orleans Saints cornerback Paulson Adebo to a three-year $54 million contract as well.
While they’re not marquee players, Holland and Adebo do address concerns the Giants had in their secondary as it appears the Giants general manager Joe Schoen is looking to wash away the 2024 season and look ahead to the 2025 season.
