The "Madden Curse" is simply one of the most incredible things to ever exist in NFL culture, and for over 20 years, it's been a reality. The curse shows that players who appear on the cover of EA Sports' popular Madden NFL video game series will see their luck turn, suffering injuries or poor play in the season after they make it. This curse has become so much part of football, that it has led to arguments and a lot of talk, and sometimes even made players think twice about considering their participation with aspects like appearing on the cover.

The Madden NFL series, named after legendary coach and commentator John Madden, has been a mainstay in sports video games since its debut. But it wasn't until 1999 that the series started including NFL players on its cover, thus indirectly creating one of sports' most durable myths.

Evidence of the Curse Through Historical Examples

To understand the Madden Curse, we first have to research and look back on how this curse started and why it became so infamous in recent history. The curse was thought to have been initiated by Garrison Hearst on the cover of Madden NFL 99's international game.

Running back Garrison Hearst put together a spectacular 1998 season for the San Francisco 49ers, with 1,570 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. But his luck changed in the NFC divisional playoff game against the Atlanta Falcons. And on the first play from scrimmage, Hearst sustained a catastrophic broken ankle that not only ended his season but also forced him to sit out the next two NFL seasons because of complications related to the injury.

A String of Misfortunes

Barry Sanders (Madden 2000): This Detroit Lions running back mid-season retirement took effect before the start of the next season.

Daunte Culpepper (Madden 2002): A dominant '01 season from the young star gave way to a knee injury late in the following season

Michael Vick (Madden 2004): Vick broke his pre-season fibula, forcing him to sit out 11 games during the '03 season.

Donovan McNabb (Madden 2006): The Eagles quarterback took the season-ending IR route after suffering a groin injury in Week 10.

Troy Polamalu and Larry Fitzgerald, (Madden 2010): To "confuse" the curse, EA Sports went with two players on this cover. Fitzgerald hurt his ribs in the playoffs, while Polamalu was limited to just five games because of knee injuries.

Confirmation Bias

Confirmation bias is a significant element that helps maintain the Madden Curse myth. Injuries or bad play by a cover athlete are well documented and blamed on the curse. On the other hand, if a cover athlete has an incredible season, that idea is considered in light of how it detracts from the curse, and thus, the perception around its influence would be distorted.

Breaking the Curse

The thing is, when you look at the players who have seemingly "broken" the curse over recent years, it does start to plant a seed of doubt:

Drew Brees (Madden 2011): The MVP of the Madden cover stayed healthy in real life and led his New Orleans Saints to a playoff berth. Although they went out in the first round against the Seahawks, Brees had a season to remember from an individual perspective.

Calvin Johnson(Madden 2013): Johnson had a monster year in 2012, breaking the single-season receiving record and setting several other records.

Richard Sherman (Madden 2015): The Seahawks won another Super Bowl as Richard played at a very high level throughout the season.

Madden NFL Franchise Curse

Something that even the Madden game franchise is feeling the effects of more than a decade later. It has been good for the series publicity-wise but also makes it more difficult for EA Sports to find cover athletes.

Marketing Challenge and Opportunity

Eventually, the curse backfired in a major way for EA Sports. It has helped add more word of mouth and suspense to the annual cover rolling. The other side of that has been that some players are nervous about taking the honor because they fear a potential curse.

Adapting to the Myth

EA Sports addresses the curse creatively. Some years, they even share the cover with other players to lessen the curse. They've also employed fan voting for the cover athlete to appease their audience while potentially taking some heat off themselves in case of any misfortune.

The Curse as a Game Feature

EA Sports even added the curse to Madden NFL 10's gameplay in a savvy marketing play. DC: Do you have some sort of Madden Curse feature that people can activate to make the cover player more likely to be injured in a game?

Is There a REAL 'Madden Curse'?

The more even-keeled perspective is that the Madden Curse likely results from a measure of coincidence combined with an even larger amount of confirmation bias and good old-fashioned dangers involved in playing professional football. Of course, taking such a high-profile gig has people watching you closely, and when things don't go exactly right, it gets magnified into some sort of sickness unit.

Looking at cover athletes between 2014 and those scheduled through 2024, only one in four might be considered "cursed," down significantly from the more than half that plagued earlier years of this phenomenon. Other explanations for the diminished public fear of a curse might include improved player conditioning and medical treatment or simply regression.

In the end, the Madden curse is still one of those fun parts in NFL game lore. It's not entirely superstition; despite what those people would like to believe, it shows that in life, there are some things that we can never truly understand.
