The road to the NFL wasn't very traditional for Gardner Minshew. He started for one season at Brandon High School, leading his team to the 6A Mississippi Championship game in Flowood, Mississippi. Although he went on to enjoy success, Minshew took a circuitous route through several schools and other stops en route to the NFL.
The Oregon State transfer spent his freshman and sophomore seasons at Northwest Mississippi Community College, guiding the Rangers to a 2015 NJCAA National Football Championship. This success eventually landed him a spot back east near his hometown at East Carolina University, where he played for two seasons. His time at ECU was marred by inconsistency, going 3-14 as a starter.
As it turns out, Minshew intended to transfer first and serve as a backup in an attempt to coach for Alabama. But fate stepped in when Washington State coach Mike Leach, on the other end of the line with a proposition: "'You want to come lead the nation in passing?'". It was an opportunity that would become a turning point in Minshew's career.
Washington State (Breakout Season)
Minshew thrived in Mike Leach's air raid offense at Washington State. He topped the country in passing yards per game (367.6) and received fifth in Heisman Trophy votes. Minshew led the Cougars to a program-record 11 wins in his Heisman-caliber performance that thrust him into national stardom.
Still, his success aside, because of his dissection from Alabama and Idaho, the reasons he transferred, Minshew's NFL future remained very much in doubt. The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Minshew in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, eventually expected to compete for a backup role behind newly-acquired starter Nick Foles.
Jags Offer Unexpected Opening
The quarterback's opportunity to make it in the NFL arrived far sooner than anticipated. Nick Foles broke a collarbone on his first TD pass as a Jag in the 2019 season opener. With his name called, Minshew stepped up to the plate.
Minshew won four of his first seven starts and threw for an 11:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. This included a historic statistical performance from none other than that of our rookie QB. Over that same span, no rookie in the Super Bowl era has completed more than 73.8 percent of his passes or had a higher passer rating than Minshew (110.6).
The Birth of Minshew Mania
Though his in-game heroics garnered plenty of attention, Minshew's off-field charisma and energy endeared him to fans and the media. The reasons behind "Minshew Mania" are plenty.
The Iconic Mustache
A thick, '70s-style mustache was Minshew's signature look. Followers started attending video games carrying cat glasses and faux mustaches to imitate their latest hero. The mustache was no longer facial hair; it had come to represent Minshew's vintage nature and golden boy swagger.
Fashion Sense and Personality
In addition to his on-field abilities, Minshew became a cult hero with fans due to his sartorial choices. At Washington State's bowl game, he showed up in a 1970s open-chested red leisure suit, his chest hair showing, and he looked like Burt Reynolds doing it. Or that his love for jorts (jean shorts) would quickly become infamous, adding to his enigmatic charm.
Media Visibility and Quotability
Minshew let his personality shine through in media appearances. He was quick-witted and self-deprecating, which is why he became a favorite with journalists and fans. Minshew joked about his brief time on the reserve/COVID-19 list, "I just did not contract it. Though at one glance of me, scurried away, which was maybe for the best."

Tales of Minshew's unorthodox offseason workout plan only furthered the legend. His practice of working out in the locker room with just a jockstrap and resistance bands once made him famous, but, he says, "it was more of a convenience thing at Wazzu."

Whether he manages to maintain cult hero status in the long term remains to be seen, but Gardner Minshew has certainly changed the landscape of the NFL by proving that even sometimes unlikely heroes can have great power.
