After weeks of speculation, the Pittsburgh Steelers officially named Russell Wilson the starting quarterback in their opening game of the 2024 NFL season against the Atlanta Falcons.
Russell Wilson came to Pittsburgh this offseason via a one-year contract after the Denver Broncos waived him. He faced training camp competition from another offseason addition, former Chicago Bears signal-caller Justin Fields.
The one-time Super Bowl champion secured the QB1 job despite being limited in training camp due to a calf injury. The 35-year-old completed 10 of 12 passes for 73 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions during the 2024 preseason.
Before naming Wilson QB1, many thought Justin Fields would get the designation since he played more for the Pittsburgh Steelers in the preseason. The 25-year-old played 56 snaps to Wilson's 25 and completed 19 of 27 attempts for 199 yards and one scoring drive.
What Mike Tomlin said about the Pittsburgh Steelers' QB situation
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin described his decision to name Russell Wilson QB1 "difficult" because of how well Justin Fields performed during the preseason.
While Fields will be Wilson's backup, Tomlin said he is considering bringing on the former Chicago Bears signal-caller in certain situations.
"That's certainly on the table, but I'm not going to get into many details regarding that or things of that nature because it doesn't help us from a competitive-advantage standpoint," Tomlin said. "But make no mistake, his talent—his unique talent as it pertains to mobility—is something that we're open to weaponizing, although I have acknowledged that Russ is QB1."
