Patrick Mahomes Talks Revenge Tour: Can the Chiefs Get Back on Top?

As the Kansas City Chiefs gear up for the 2025 NFL season, quarterback Patrick Mahomes is embracing a mindset focused less on revenge and more on execution. After a crushing Super Bowl LVII loss to the Philadelphia Eagles that ended their hopes of a three-peat, Mahomes and the Chiefs enter the new campaign with a clear objective: to show who they truly are on the field.
Mahomes, a six-time Pro Bowler and two-time NFL MVP, put the disappointment behind him in a recent interview with Kay Adams on FanDuel TV. “I’m honestly just ready to play football again,” Mahomes said. “Whenever you lose, you kind of have this taste in your mouth that you want to go out there and revenge that or whatever you want to say. At the same time, I feel like I’ve had to sit back and just listen to people talk and talk. I’m like, ‘Let’s just play football and just handle it all out there.’ I don’t really want to talk about it. I just want to go out and show who we are as the Kansas City Chiefs”.
The 2024 season saw Mahomes lead the Chiefs to a stellar 15-2 regular-season record, throwing for 3,928 yards and 26 touchdowns. However, those numbers were his career lows in several key passing metrics, including yards per attempt (6.8), and his decision-making and pocket presence sometimes faltered. The Chiefs’ offense also struggled with injuries, losing top receivers Rashee Rice and Marquise “Hollywood” Brown for extended periods, and the offensive line faced instability at left tackle. These factors contributed to their inability to perform at their usual championship level when it mattered most.
Despite the setbacks, Mahomes remains confident that a healthier roster will restore the Chiefs’ dominance. “If the Football Gods permit me to have a full complement of weapons, my output should return to form,” Mahomes acknowledged, underscoring the importance of team health and chemistry.
Beyond statistics and injuries, Mahomes emphasized the intangible key to success in 2025: fun. “I think it’s just us having fun again,” he told Adams. “It’s always been fun playing on the Kansas City Chiefs. That’s what makes it special. I feel like last year, I don’t want to say it’s pressure, but guys wanted to go out there to win every single week. And not for the fun of the game, just because we’re supposed to. Let’s go out there and have fun. The wins will come if we play the way we know we can play. We have the talent, we have the coaches, we work harder than anybody in the NFL. Let’s go out there and have fun and let the results handle themselves”.
The Chiefs’ 2025 schedule promises immediate drama with a rematch against the Eagles in Week 2 at Arrowhead Stadium, where Kansas City was undefeated (8-0) during the 2024 regular season. This game offers Mahomes and the Chiefs a prime opportunity to “handle it all out there” and silence critics who have questioned their style and resilience.
General Manager Brett Veach has also prepared the roster to be competitive and deep, aiming to avoid the fatigue that plagued the team last season. Mahomes’ leadership and the team’s collective experience appearing in five of the last six Super Bowls suggest that Kansas City remains a formidable contender.
While the “revenge tour” label is often attached to the Chiefs’ 2025 campaign, Mahomes prefers to focus on fundamentals: playing well, staying healthy, and enjoying the game. With his talent, the coaching staff, and a motivated roster, the Chiefs have every reason to believe they can reclaim their spot atop the NFL.
