The NFL draft is among us. On Thursday, April 24, over 30 names will be called upon by NFL teams and have their lives changed forever. Who will be the next superstars in the NFL and who will be the biggest bust in the upcoming draft.
This is also the time of the year where NFL “experts” are extremely busy coming up with mock drafts, trade predictions and first-round projections. Most of the time these things are ridiculous, but sometimes they're accurate predictions.
One thing that is always interesting about these picks is that they’re usually consistent. Three different mock drafts will have the same players going to the same teams. This year is a bit different.
While a lot of these mock drafts do have consistency with the same players, but not the same teams. It seems like one person will say Travis Hunter will be selected first overall, but then others will have him down at the fourth-overall pick with the New England Patriots.
One thing’s for sure, we know who are the best players in the upcoming draft, so let's take a look at them.
The undisputed no.1 overall prospect is Abdul Carter from Penn State. Carter is projected to go first-overall in the draft by the Tennessee Titans and if he doesn’t go no.1, he’ll definitely be picked in the top three of the draft.
According to espn.com draft analysis, Carter is an elite pass rushing with quickness. He plays mostly edge rusher, but he does have experience at linebacker which can make him a versatile threat. He’s a good run defender with an eye for reading quarterbacks.
Obviously the next best player in the draft is Colorado’s Travis Hunter. Listed as a cornerback, but everyone knows that he has the ability to play both receiver and corner. Draft analysis calls him a playmaker who can go up and get the ball.
As a corner, he can undercut routes and can break up passess while trailing the receiver. As a receiver himself, he can shake receivers at the top of routes and is outstanding with yards after catch. Any team that drafts will get a versatile and extremely athletic player.
Another name to look out for would be the fifth overall prospect, Ashton Jeanty. He’s an interesting case who broke numerous records for Boise State and he led the FBS in rushing yards and touchdowns.
His biggest downside is that he played in the Mountain West Conference, a conference with lower-level competition. It’s worth-noting because will Jeanty be able to transition his tackle-breaking abilities over into the NFL.
The best quarterback in the NFL draft is the University of Miami, Florida’s Cam Ward. Ranked seventh overall as a prospect, he can make tight throws with the ability to escape the pocket with his legs. He has patience and has improved his decision making during his time in college.
Any team would be lucky to have a QB like Ward on their roster and some mock drafts have him being drafted first-overall. In a draft class where the QB position is rather thin, Ward is the best option to try and find a franchise-like QB in this years’ draft
