Najee Harris Trade Rumors: Chargers Running Back on the Block as Offense Rebuilds

The Los Angeles Chargers’ offseason moves have sparked intense speculation about the future of running back Najee Harris. After signing Harris to a one-year deal worth up to $9.25 million in free agency, the Chargers surprised many by selecting North Carolina’s Omarion Hampton in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. This combination has fueled rumors that Harris, despite his recent arrival, could be on the trade block as the Chargers look to reshape their backfield and overall offensive identity.

A Fresh Start and Early Questions

Najee Harris joined the Chargers after four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he established himself as a durable workhorse, starting 71 consecutive games and rushing for over 1,000 yards in each season. His career totals include 4,312 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns on 1,097 carries, placing him sixth in Steelers franchise history for rushing yards. However, despite his volume and reliability, Harris’ efficiency has often been questioned, with an average of just 3.9 yards per carry during his time in Pittsburgh.

The Chargers signed Harris hoping to bolster a running game that had struggled for consistency. ESPN analyst Bill Barnwell highlighted that a scheme shift to Greg Roman’s gap-running concepts could unlock Harris’ potential, noting, “His best stretch as a pro came at the end of the 2023 season with interim offensive coordinator Eddie Faulkner, who leaned more into gap concepts. Harris has the size to succeed in those and has more wiggle when he's one-on-one against a defender than you might think”.

Drafting Hampton: A Sign of Transition?

The Chargers’ decision to draft Omarion Hampton in the first round raised eyebrows given Harris’ recent signing. Hampton, a dynamic North Carolina back, is expected to compete for early carries and could quickly assume a lead role. This move suggests the Chargers are planning a committee approach or are preparing for a future without Harris.

Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox included Harris on a list of players who could be traded, citing the Chargers’ crowded backfield and the team’s need to maximize resources at a position known for short career spans. Knox speculated that teams like the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers might express interest, as both franchises seek to improve their running games.

Trade Value and Market Outlook

Despite questions about his efficiency, Harris’ durability and experience make him an attractive trade asset. He is one of the few backs in the league to start every game since entering the NFL, a rarity in a position plagued by injuries. His one-year deal also provides flexibility for acquiring teams wary of long-term commitments.

However, some analysts caution that trading Harris so soon after signing him could disrupt the Chargers’ offensive continuity. A recent article from Heavy.com argued that Harris should not be on the block, emphasizing the value of a bruising runner in Roman’s run-heavy scheme and the potential for Harris and Hampton to form a formidable one-two punch.

Looking Ahead

Najee Harris’ future with the Chargers remains uncertain as the 2025 season approaches. While the team’s drafting of Hampton signals a potential shift, Harris’ proven durability and fit in the offensive scheme could keep him in Los Angeles. Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman face the challenge of balancing two talented backs while maximizing offensive production.

As the season unfolds, trade rumors will likely persist, but Harris’ performance and the evolving backfield dynamics will ultimately determine whether the Chargers keep their high-volume runner or capitalize on his market value to further reshape their roster. For now, Harris remains a key figure in the Chargers’ offensive rebuild, with his role and tenure still very much in play.
