Final NFL Offseason Moves: What Every Team Still Needs Before Training Camp

Final NFL Offseason Moves: What Every Team Still Needs Before Training Camp

As the NFL offseason winds down and training camps open their doors in mid to late July, teams across the league are making their final roster adjustments. With free agency behind them and the 2025 NFL Draft class integrated, the focus now shifts to fine-tuning rosters and addressing lingering needs before the grind of the regular season begins. Here’s a look at what every team still needs to do before training camp kicks off.

Quarterback Battles and Depth Concerns

Several teams enter training camp with unresolved quarterback situations. The New York Giants, for example, have confirmed Russell Wilson as their starter, but rookie Jaxson Dart’s impressive college numbers (10.8 yards per pass attempt in 2024) make the quarterback competition one to watch closely. Similarly, the Cleveland Browns face a pivotal quarterback battle that could define their season.

Teams like the Washington Commanders are also finalizing their offensive units, with early projections indicating a strong offense but still some questions about depth and consistency.

Defensive Adjustments and Youth Integration

Defensively, teams are focused on integrating young talent while shoring up weaknesses exposed last season. The Philadelphia Eagles, fresh off a Super Bowl LIX championship, are turning to their young secondary to fill the void left by departed veterans like C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Darius Slay. Second-year cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, along with 2025 draftee Andrew Mukuba, will be under the microscope as they adjust to starting roles in Vic Fangio’s scheme.

The San Francisco 49ers are also navigating personnel changes, with several defensive linemen and safeties competing for starting roles, including newcomers Jason Pinnock and Richie Grant. Injuries have forced the 49ers to be strategic about roster spots, particularly as Malik Mustapha begins the season on injured reserve recovering from an ACL tear.

Running Back and Offensive Line Depth

Running back depth remains a priority for many teams. The 49ers, for example, project Christian McCaffrey as their lead back, supported by Jordan Mason and rookie Jordan James. However, competition remains fierce for backup roles, with players like Isaac Guerendo and Patrick Taylor vying for spots.

Offensive lines across the league continue to be a focus for improvement. The 49ers, after losing a key guard to free agency, are experimenting with players like Ben Bartch and Nick Zakelj to solidify their front. Other teams are similarly juggling veteran presence with promising young talent to protect their quarterbacks and open running lanes.

Final Free Agent Signings and Roster Cuts

Though major free agency moves have largely concluded, teams are still expected to make minor signings to fill gaps or add competition. These moves often include veteran specialists, depth players, or practice squad candidates. For instance, the 49ers brought in veteran kicker Greg Joseph to compete with Jake Moody, ensuring competition at a critical position.

Roster cuts and final evaluations during training camp will be crucial. With initial 53-man rosters being fluid, teams will use early camp performances to decide who makes the cut and who is placed on practice squads or injured reserve.

Injuries and Player Returns

Several key players are returning from injury and are expected to make significant impacts. The 2025 season will see the return of stars like Aaron Rodgers in Pittsburgh and Travis Hunter in Jacksonville, whose presence could alter team dynamics. Teams will carefully monitor these players’ health during camp to ensure readiness for the season opener.

Training Camp Dates and Locations

Training camps officially open between July 15 and July 25, with most teams reporting around mid-July. The Ravens, Bills, and Eagles are among the earliest to report, while teams like the Cardinals and Falcons start closer to July 22-23. These camps mark the final opportunity for coaches to evaluate talent and implement schemes before preseason games begin.

As the NFL offseason closes, teams are focused on resolving quarterback battles, integrating young defensive talent, shoring up offensive depth, and managing player health. With training camps just weeks away, these final moves and evaluations will set the tone for the 2025 season. Fans can expect intense competition, surprising roster decisions, and the emergence of new stars as teams prepare to chase the Lombardi Trophy.
