ABOUT College Football

The NCAA is divided into the FBS and FCS for football. The FBS are the schools that are allowed to give out football scholarships. There are ten conferences, with four (the “Power-Four”) dominating in terms of fans, revenue, and wins.

The College Football Playoff recently expanded to a 12-team format. In the new format, the winners of each Power Four conference automatically qualify for one of the top four seeds, which also earns them a bye. The rest of the schools are at the mercy of the selection committee, who rank them and select the next best eight teams, who compete in the first round of the playoffs. One of those eight schools must be a fifth division winner from the “Group of Five.”

The four winners of their first-round games would then meet the four Power-Four conference winners in the quarterfinals. That would lead into the semifinals, and eventually to the finals.

How does the CFP selection committee decide on the teams?

The CFP selection committee takes various factors into account, including record, strength of schedule, strength of victory, and team strength.
