Cecilia Braekhus' path to boxing stardom was unorthodox, a mix of stubborn will and outright defiance that would soon become her career calling card. Braekhus, an adopted Colombian with Norwegian parents born in Colombia, was raised as a child in Bergen. She started attending training sessions at a local gym while sneaking out of her fourth-floor bedroom window onto the fire escape to get there, and as dangerous as that could have been, it became one of the roots of victory later on.

After resistance from her parents and societal norms that dissuaded any commitment to women's boxing, Braekhus persevered. Despite her parents' initial objection, she excelled through hard work and natural talent, which ultimately changed their minds, as she was wholeheartedly embraced by the boxing community.

Braekhus won 21 National championships as an amateur in her native Norway and became an Indian-style champ winner for eight straight years. She performed well, winning the German Super Cup each year from age 19 and collecting ten local titles. In November 2007, German promoter Wilfried Sauerland signed her to a professional contract after she was successful in the amateur ranks. She would go on, and this fight helped to set the stage for Braekhus to make history as Norway's first-ever female World Champion.

First Lady of Boxing: A Dominant Reign

On the professional level, Cecilia Braekhus' career has been nothing more than one of a kind, so she received the nickname "The First Lady" in boxing. By the time she faced Vinni Skovgaard on March 14, 2009, after just two years as a professional, Braekhus was already boxing for both the WBC and WBA welterweight world titles. The win was the first moment in one of the most dominant stretches in women's boxing history.

Braekhus' ring success is demonstrated by her gaudy record and lengthy championship reign. Through August 2024, she has a professional career of 37 wins (9 KOs), two losses, and one draw. But what makes Braekhus unique is how long she has been at the top and how comprehensive her reign as champion is. She stood as the WBC and WBA champion for an incredible 11 years and 154 days between March 14, 2009, and August 15 August 15th, 2020.

Undefeated Champion and Major Records Set

But even two world titles couldn't contain Braekhus' hunger for more. She also held the WBO welterweight title in May 2010. Finally, in 2014, Braekhus made history by capturing the IBF welterweight title with a victory feat, Ivana Habazin, on September 13, making her the first female boxer to win all four recognized world titles simultaneously. This was a concrete statement that Cecilia remains undisputed as the undefeated champion in the Welterweight division.

Besides holding titles for the longest reigning, four-belt undisputed boxing champion in Guinness World Record history, Braekhus was also named "Most Bouts Undefeated by a Female Champion" Boxer. The benchmarks serve notice of her not just as the being to beat, but she is doing it again and again for an extraordinary period at this level.

Balanced Physical Technique

Cecilia Braekhus has had great success in the ring due to her unique fighting style and boxing game. Braekhus has always been a composed and skilled boxer with impressive speed, and she is superior in her skills to almost all her opponents. She is known for her exceptional footwork, solid defense, and ability to dictate the tempo of any fight.

Although not largely considered a knockout artist (9 KOs in 37 wins), Braekhus' effectiveness comes from her ability to outbox and navigate the distance over an entire fight. She is well-trained and versatile in combat, so she has many different ways of handling a challenger.

Shattering Glass Ceilings, Inspiring a Generation

One of the biggest pioneering moments in the career of Braekhus was closer to home in Norway. Norway banned professional boxing in 1981, the year of Braekhus' birth. This prompted her to find a job in Germany instead, but Braekhus' success and profile would result in a law change. She had out-grown the smaller venues, and Courteous fought on her home soil for only the second time since turning pro in 2010, with a sold-out bout at Oslo Spektrum that earned rave reviews from Government dignitaries.

The success of Braekhus has also done wonders to bolster women's boxing around the world. In 2018, she competed in the inaugural HBO telecast of a women's bout, a real significant achievement for the sport. Furthermore, this exposure helped open the doors to international recognition and opportunities for female boxers.

Legacy and Continued Impact

Although the fight left Cecilia Braekhus without a title, as she moves on in her career to junior middleweight and beyond, it should be clear that her legacy of being among the best female fighters ever is solidified. Her dominance at Welterweight, history-making championship run, and contribution to the evolution of women's boxing mean we can only describe what it takes to beat 'The GWOAT' as an opponent with X-Factor.

Despite new hardships in her career, namely suffering the first defeats of her professional campaign back to back, with both losses coming by way of Jessica McCaskill in 2020 and earlier this year, Braekhus is a forward presence within boxing. The fact that she moved up to junior middleweight is a testament to her resiliency and ability to reinvent herself, shown with an example for aspiring boxers.

Cecilia Braekhus's career has been one that speaks to relentlessness, skill, and a trailblazing spirit. From her unusual intro to the boxing scene as a champion and unbeaten record holder in four major federations at Welterweight, Braekhus naturally carved out an even greater legacy comment of what proves vulnerability to be encountered inside the ring. Her technical perfection, unparalleled mental strength, and adaptive intelligence have her staying atop the world stage for ten consecutive years.
