Conor McGregor’s future in combat sports has been one of the biggest stories of 2024. He has recently expressed dissatisfaction with the UFC for not fighting in 2024. However, despite not fighting in three years, McGregor always stays in the headlines.
On a recent stream, Conor McGregor discussed that he was offered two mega crossover fights with boxing legend Terence Crawford. One that would take place in a boxing ring and one inside the octagon.
“ I said Crawford, they’re talking to me here about you and me. They’re asking for a fight it’s going to be hundreds of millions of dollars. I don’t fancy taking a kick off Conor McGregor he said.” McGregor told his viewers.
McGregor is not a stranger to these claims. He was supposed to box Manny Pacquiao years ago. It never took place. Sometimes, not everything McGregor says is true. However, This was not the case.
“Sometimes it ain’t about the money,” Crawford said in an interview with Bernie Da Boxer. Citing his unwillingness to take kicks and elbows.
A Crawford vs McGregor matchup would make tons of money. However, Crawford not wanting to fight in the octagon, where he has no experience is smart business. Especially when he’s still an active fighter seeking to fight big fights at junior middleweight and potentially against Canelo Alvarez. Why take unnecessary damage for the sake of money?
Also worth noting, Dana White has replaced crossover fights. When Anthony Joshua brutally knocked out Francis Ngannou White had this to say. "You know how I feel about crossover fights. That is how they end."
McGregor is still under contract with the UFC for two more fights. As of now, he is restricted in what fights he can and can’t make. The UFC has full control of his next two fights.
McGregor’s continued discussions of fighting in boxing and bare-knuckle fighting makes it clear, that the Notorious will be seeking new opportunities after he hits free agency, which could be at some point in 2025.
Conor McGregor's future in combat sports remains uncertain as he expresses frustration with the UFC while exploring potential high-profile crossover fights, particularly with Terence Crawford. Despite his inactivity in the ring, McGregor's ongoing discussions highlight his desire for new opportunities, especially as he approaches free agency in 2025. It will be very interesting to see what McGregor does at the conclusion of his UFC contract.
