Defying Father Time: Linton Vassell is gunning for gold in latest career resurgence

A lot of fighters start to decline in their late 30s, especially those with multiple fights under their belt. Linton Vassell, who will turn 39 next month, is only getting better.

Linton Vassell has been fighting professionally since 2008, and he has a lot of battle scars to show for it. Known as “The Swarm” for his pressure-packed fighting style, Linton Vassell has held championships with OMMAC and UCMMA. But the only thing missing on his impressive resume is a Bellator championship.

That will all change soon. Linton Vassell has been on a rampage as of late, winning four straight fights including three impressive finishes. The British striker and proud Fan Arch athlete has been racking up wins in Bellator since 2013. However, the gold always seemed to elude him, as Linton Vassell fell short each time. After winning his first three bouts in the promotion, he took on Emmanuel Newton for the Light Heavyweight title. Despite a strong effort, he lost via rear-naked choke in round 5.

Linton Vassell once again worked his way back up, winning four of his next five bouts. This includes avenging that loss to Newton and even becoming the first fighter to finish former LHW champ, Liam McGeary, via an arm-triangle choke.

This catapulted him to another title shot, this time against Ryan Bader. Linton Vassell came up short once more, losing via TKO in the third round. The worst stretch of his career followed shortly, as he got knocked out by Phil Davis in his next bout, and lost via decision to Valentin Voldavsky in his return to Heavyweight.

Linton Vassell was written off, with some pundits claiming his best days are behind him. The Swarm proved them all wrong.

He brutally dispatched Sergei Kharitonov and Ronny Market and got a split decision win over Tyler Fortune. Linton Vassell then came up with a statement win over Timothy Johnson in his last outing.

After getting nearly knocked down and nearly finished in round 1, Linton Vassell showcased how much he’s grown as a fighter. He came roaring back and somehow got an improbable TKO victory at the 4:21 mark of Round 1.

Linton Vassell has already proven himself and has earned the rematch with reigning Bellator HW king Ryan Bader. He has shown improvements in all facets, and his ground and pound has become deadlier than ever. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?
