Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is certainly not a sport that requires the same type of strength, agility, or mastery. Although skill and strategy are important, brute force can also make a huge difference in the octagon. Over its long history, MMA has always featured fighters with incredible fighting skills and remarkable and imposing muscular physiques that are enough to intimidate even the most seasoned opponent right at first sight and simply overtake anybody's attention. The following article ranks what I believe to be the top 5 most muscly MMA men of all time, not so much how their muscles defined/made factors in them succeeding inside the octagon.
Criteria for Ranking
- Muscle mass and definition
- Strength-to-weight ratio
- Effect of musculature on performance
- Muscular body throughout career
1. Yoel Romero
Physical Statistics:
- Height: 6'0" (183 cm)
- Weight: 185 lbs (84 kg)
- Reach: 73.5" (187 cm)
Cuban freestyle wrestler turned MMA fighter Yoel Romero is a literal freak of nature who appears to get older. Romero is 46 years old and still looks in better shape than half the fighters on the roster. Sofiane's well-defined legs, deltoids, and bulging calves make him look extra titanic.
In addition to his Olympic wrestling background and freak show strength, Romero has become one of the most dominant fighters at around 185. His takedowns are damaging, and his knockouts come with seemingly little effort due to the extreme power he harnesses.
2. Brock Lesnar
Physical Statistics:
- Height: 6'3" (191 cm)
- Weight: 265 lbs (120 kg)
- Reach: 81" (206 cm)
When Brock Lesnar made his UFC debut in 2008, he introduced a new form of physical intimidation as a former NCAA Division I champion wrestler and WWE superstar. Lesnar's enormous build and chiseled wingspan made him resemble some kind of comic book hero instead of the mere mortal sports fans have come to expect from their MMA fighters.
Brock Lesnar has an massive chest, boulder shoulders, and tree t,runk tree-trunkmere appearance was enough to scare opponents well before getting inside the ring. Lesnar tipped the scales at 265 pounds, right at the heavyweight limit, where fighters are expected to be bigger men. He was a sculpted mountain of humanity who moved quickly for someone so huge.
3. Paulo Costa
Physical Statistics:
- Height: 6'1" (185 cm)
- Weight: 185 lbs (84 kg)
- Reach: 72" (183 cm)
Bulldozing his way across the roster, Brazilian powerhouse Paulo Costa quickly established himself as one of the simplest yet most intimidating facts about him: at 6-1 (185 cm), he stands an imposing frame tall and weighs in around middleweight. Those two traits, combined with his chiseled physique and smash-mouth approach to fighting, have endeared him as a fan favorite while establishing him quite the adversary in the octagon.
The broad-shouldered Costa boasts an expansive back, chiseled abs, and strong arms. Costa has a special capacity for fitting so much muscle on his body and miraculously coming in at 185 pounds each time. That has certainly forged a narrative about potential PED use tied to his hulking physical presence, but Costa has yet to fail any drug tests.
4. Francis Ngannou
Physical Statistics:
- Height: 6'4" (193 cm)
- Weight: 257 lbs (117 kg)
- Reach: 83" (211 cm)
Cameroonian-French heavyweight Francis Ngannou is practically the scariest puncher to ever grace a UFC cage. His physique and knockout ability have made him one of the most intimidating figures in all combat sports.
Ngannou looks like he's just the right size and very well-defined. His shoulders are broad, his arms so big that at times they barely hang by his sides, as though laced into a strait jacket of muscle and flesh. His neck thickened to size the kind required for 140-pound tires and then the wicked taper down from all this bulk already stacked into an imposing package, etched up top like some back-alley brawler. What adds to Ngannou's legend is that he seems to have built his hulking frame not with traditional bodybuilding but through manual labor in sand quarries as a child.
1. Alistair Overeem
Physical Statistics:
- Height: 6'4" (193 cm)
- Weight: 265 lbs (120 kg)
- Reach: 80" (203 cm)
Coming in at #1 on this list is transformational fighter Alistair Overeem and with good reason. Overeem, affectionately nicknamed "Ubereem" in his freakiest muscular states, revamped what was possible regarding muscle and the MMA landscape.
At his height, Overeem had an otherworldly physique. He looked like a Godzilla monster of MMA with his gigantic size, bulk, pectoral muscles, and rock-cutting six abs. Overeem, however, always managed to maintain definition despite tipping the scales at the heavyweight limit of 265 pounds.
Overeem strength was oak-like, and the muscles produced fury in his strikes to their knees and leg kicks. His UFC 141 fight with Brock Lesnar was a testament to how physical he could be against even the biggest opponents. Overeem's power is equally valuable in the grappling department, where he is a master at controlling his foes on the ground.
While MMA is about more than muscles alone, these five fighters have demonstrated how a good physique can help in the competitive realm of combat sports.
