Differences Between Jujitsu and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Jujitsu and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) can be traced back to traditional Japanese martial arts. However, they have gone their separate ways over the years, leading to completely independent martial art forms with different specificities. Jujitsu, also known as Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, is said to have originated more than two thousand years ago and includes a range of techniques from different sources. The earliest form was practiced by samurai warriors and relied primarily on being able to strike, lock the joints, throw opponents, and use weapons. In contrast, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was created as a subset of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, focusing primarily on grappling and ground fighting. The art, called Brazilian jiu-jitsu, was created and developed in Brazil by the Gracie family through its lineage, and it places a great emphasis on leverage and timing athleticism with an aim at controlling your opponent.
Techniques and Principles
Jujitsu
In the case of traditional jujitsu, this includes striking techniques such as chokes, joint locks, and throws, along with weapons-based combat. It attempts to apply techniques in real situations and make beneficial use of energy. Jujitsu was also developed to be used in self-defense situations and real combat.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
BJJ has spent years perfecting its grappling, joint locks, chokes, etc. It is heavily focused on ground fighting, which teaches practitioners how to dominate their opponents on the ground and transition into full mount position where they can apply common submission holds that involve pain compliance by bending a joint past its normal range of motion. The BJJ strategy is the timing and technique wishing to leverage your weight against experienced foes. With some practical applications for self-defense, it has become an organized sport with an accompanying rule set and competitions.
Training Methodologies
Jujitsu
Jujitsu instruction is usually combined with some form of disciplined practice, including solo drills, partner exercises, and controlled sparring. This involves repeatedly practicing moves and techniques to build muscle memory, which, in time, becomes a more flowing skill.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
BJJ training consists of drills, live sparring rolling, and competition preparation. It also teaches positional controls like mount, side control, guard, and back, which are important for both the successful accomplishment of submissions and dominance over your opponent.

Both Jujitsu and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu have a shared historical background, but they have different focuses, methods of training, or philosophy variables to represent their cultural differences, which reflect how they developed in each country where they were born.
