As early as just four years old, he was racing with the Lightning Bolt Track Club under mentor Garlynn Boyd, who to this day is still somewhat of a "second mom" for him. Throughout his youth, Bromell has suffered a plethora of injuries ranging from broken bones to even having his hip fractured, and despite this, he still had an unyielding passion for sprinting.

In high school, he was already turning heads, winning the national U20 100m title and claiming bronze at the 2013 Pan American Junior Championships in Colombia. Of particular note was his performance at the 2014 NCAA Championships, where he ran a world under-20 record of 9.97 and became the first junior to break that barrier in history, running it exactly legally adjusted (+1.0 wind).

His journey continued at Baylor University, where his collegiate career validated the increasing recognition of his potential. Bromell ran the fastest 100 meters in NCAA history to win a championship, and as if that wasn't enough, he became a record-courier, too. He burst onto the global scene later that year when he shared bronze in the 100 meters at the World Championships in Beijing. This was a major career breakthrough for him as it made known to all that he could take on the best international sprinters.
