Italy already has an established history of producing legends in the worldwide sports spectrum. Whether the lunge of Gustavo Marzi in fencing or Pietro Mennea's high-speed sprints, Italian athletes are a synonym for excellence and passion for their sports.

1. Gustavo Marzi (1908 - 1966)

  • Sport: Fencing Foil and Sabre
  • Active years: 1928-19380

Throughout the unofficial world championships before 1935, Marzi would capture an astounding ten titles, two in individual foil and seven team foils, as well as a World title with Italy's saber side. His record-breaking performances and physical understanding of the sport made him more successful than all others in history.

2. Pietro Mennea (1952 - 2013)

  • Sport: Athletics (200m)
  • Years Active: 1972-1984

Pietro Mennea, known as "la Freccia del Sud" or "the Arrow of the South," is arguably one of Italy's most prestigious athletes. He had a stranglehold on the event and went unbeaten in over three years on his way to Olympic gold at the Moscow Olympics in 1980, as well as setting a WR of almost exactly two-tenths north (19.72) of it back in September '79, which lasted nearly seventeen years.

3. Dorando Pietri (1885 - 1942)

  • Competitive Discipline: Long-distance running 
  • Marathon Career Span: 1908

His is a tale of triumph and tragedy. He won the marathon at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London but later was disqualified.

Despite Pietri's anticlimactic end, his determinations and refusal to perseverance inspired a nation so much that he received an unusual mount from Queen Alexandra in honor of his courage: a golden cup. This iconic display of good sportsmanship and empathetic support has made Pietri a darling figure in Italian sporting history.

4. Giorgio Pessina (1902 - 1977)

  • Sport: Fencing Foil
  • Years Active: 1928 -1932

Giorgio Pessina is Italy's fourth most-known athlete. He successful foilist with an  HPI of 55.76, and winning Gold at the 1928 Summer Olympics. His international success reflected his technical ability and fierce competitive nature as he took on the best fencers from around the globe.

5. Gioacchino Guaragna (1908 - 1971)

  • Discipline: Sport Fencing Foil
  • Active from: 1924-1936

Guaragna was a successful foil fencer who took two gold and one silver in the team event at three different Olympiads during an era where he became one of Italy's most accomplished sabreurs.

Not just an Olympic champion, Guaragna would go on to win many world championship titles, confirming his status as one of the best in fencing.

6. Ugo Frigerio (1901 - 1968)

  • Sport: Race Walking
  • Years Active:1920 - 1932

Overall the most famous Italian athlete, Frigerio was a multiple Olympian who competed in four different race walking events from 3 km to 50 at the Olympics between 1920, and Athens held five decades, winning three golds and one bronze.

His success at the Olympic Games was accompanied by numerous world titles in the race-walking events, which established him as one of his generation's greatest.

7. Giulio Gaudini (1904 - 1948)

  • Sport: Fencing Foil & Sabre
  • Years Active: 1924-1936

Gaudini was a master of the foil and saber, competing in four consecutive Olympics from 1924 to 1936, earning three gold, four silver, and two bronze medals. The international competitor was good, a testament to Gaudini's technical mastery and competitive spirit against the world's best. 

8. Luigi Beccali (1907 - 1990)

  • Sport: Athletics (1500m)
  • Years Active: 1932-36

Beccali is the first Italian to have won an Olympic gold medal in athletics. His victory came during a dramatic showdown for the 1500 m title at the controversial 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

In addition to his Olympic glory, Beccali went on to become European Champion over the 1500m distance, confirming him as one of the best middle-distance runners of that era.

9. Adolfo Consolini (1917-1969)

  • Sport: Discus
  • Years Active: 1948 -1960

Competing in four consecutive Olympic Games from 1948 to 1960, Consolini won the gold medal and set an Olympic record for the discus throw at his first Olympics.

In addition to his Olympic success, Consolini won three European Championship titles in the discus throw, proving himself not just in his continent's leagues but also worldwide.

10. Eugenio Monti (1928 - 2003)

  • Sport - Bobsleigh
  • Years of Achievement- 1952 -1968

Monti was one of the top bobsledders in history, earning ten world championship medals all-time leader, including nine gold and six Olympic medals.

Monti became famous for an incident at the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria, when he agreed to lend a damaged steering arm defective since his first run from their two-man sled to Bruttor Polig of British East Africa so they could compete.
