Ben Johnson’s name is laced with controversy. But make no mistake about it. He is still the greatest sprinter of all time.
Long before fellow FanArch athletes like Fred Kerley and Marvin Bracy-Williams dominated the track scene, Ben Johnson was considered the world’s fastest man alive in his prime.
The Canadian sprinter was the true OG and was unbeatable at the height of his dominance in the late ‘80s.
Back in the 1987–88 season, Ben Johnson broke both the 100m and the 60m indoor World Records.
He also won gold in the 1987 World Championships and 1988 Summer Olympics. The fact that he beat his longtime rival Carl Lewis was the icing on the cake.
At his best, Ben Johnson set incredible record-breaking runs. He was the first man to beat 9.9 seconds in the 100-meter race in Rome in 1987, followed by a 9.8-second finish in Seoul the following year.

After his suspension was lifted in 1991, Ben Johnson made his return to track. The adulation he received from the massive crowd at Hamilton Indoor Games in 1991 proves he was still beloved by his fans.
Ben Johnson also won the 50 meters in 1993 in Grenoble, France, after he clocked in at .65 seconds which was just 0.04 seconds shy of the world record.
Aside from his freakish speed, what separates Ben Johnson from other track greats was his raw strength. He only weighed 72 kg around the time he competed, but could reportedly bench somewhere around 165 kg.
After his track and field career came to an end, Ben Johnson lived his life to the fullest by appearing in movies and commercials.
