Former pro football quarterback Michael Vick was once hailed as one of the most exciting professional sports players. Vick was the first overall pick by the Atlanta Falcons back in 2001, and he instantly became a sensational athlete who could outrun opponents as easily as outpass them. In 2002, he led the Falcons to a playoff victory and again in an MVP season with Atlanta in 05, where Vick became one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in history. Vick's star power rose to great heights, and before long, he was one of the most popular players on his team and a leaguewide icon due in part to being among the first wave of high-mobility quarterbacks.

But Vick's career took a tragic turn in 2007, leading to him being caught up in a dogfighting controversy. He later pleaded guilty to federal dogfighting charges after an investigation rooted out a major nationwide gambling ring he had been involved in called "Bad Newz Kennels" and responsible for the hanging, shooting, electrocution, and drowning of dozens of underperforming dogs. That scandal led to federal charges and his indictment. He served 23 months in prison and was ostracized afterward. This resulted in the NFL suspending him indefinitely, spelling the end of what could have been a promising career all because he did not make better decisions.

Vick's Money Troubles and Bankruptcy

Vick, who was released from prison in 2009 after serving a sentence for his role in running an illegal dogfight ring, also had major financial troubles following his arrest. In July 2008, he applied for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection almost a year later, claiming assets of around $16 million against liabilities exceeding $20 million. The financial chaos arose from his questionable fiscal choices, bad bets, and some payback for his criminal preceding.

Once a $130 million professional quarterback, Vick gambled away tens of millions of that fortune and made several other financial mistakes, including bad business decisions. He put his money into different businesses but lost it on two that did not meet the expected profits: a restaurant chain and a clothing line. He bought several properties around the country, including a Virginia mansion that he admitted left him financially overextended. The maintenance of these properties, the legal fees, and his loss of an NFL salary were a financial recipe for disaster.

What's more, Vick had the blow of bankruptcy worsened by his dogfighting guilty plea. It severely impacted him financially, as this was long before Kaepernick's newfound minimal career paycheck. Because of his court-ordered restitution payments due to the criminal activities that frightened him, he had no choice but to allocate a large portion of what remained from other charitable contributions and operating expenses to work off debts racked up during 8–10 hours of working.

What His Bankruptcy Means Long-Term

The fallout from Vick's bankruptcy was widespread. After serving prison, he struggled a lot to get it back together. The dogfighting scandal and his criminal record brought a stigma upon him that ensured he would never be able to win back the trust of fans, sponsors, or much of the NFL community. He would eventually sign with the Philadelphia Eagles for the 2009 season and have a career resurgence, but not before his past life caught up to him, affecting how he was viewed by fans and those in or around the league.

Vick's bankruptcy was also a cautionary tale for many professional athletes regarding fiscal matters. Most human beings would simply not survive even months who were pumped, baked for a few seconds, and dried out before smoking them. Vick is like many athletes who are not savvy enough to handle their winnings and thus make poor investments, mainly gloating too soon or living off the proceeds.

Experts agree that athletes need financial education, just like everyone else, and it is their responsibility to seek advice from a professional they trust. The National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) is making strides in educating players on financial management, investment strategies, and retirement savings.  However, few teams take advantage of finances, which is still challenging to navigate correctly, as Vick's story shows how quickly fortunes can turn and how catastrophic financial irresponsibility can be.

Many sports fans know the sad tale of Michael Vick, a true life story from poverty to bankruptcy that warns about how bad financial decision-making in this era can lead even wealthy athletes swiftly down an icy path toward brokerage. This should be a parable for athletes and any other high-income individuals, from his meteoric rise as an NFL superstar to what seemed like weekly TMZ stories about criminal activity or failed business attempts.

Lessons Learned

Financial Literacy is Key: Athletes and high-income earners need to learn about finance in order to take appropriate action to build their wealth.

Get Advice From Financial Planners: Utilize financial planners to understand the best investment and plan your finances most efficiently.

The Risks That Come With Investing: Not every business idea out there is solid, and as such, it requires a great deal of time to research the market. One should also make sure he or she takes due diligence very seriously before finally putting money into an investment.

Live Within Means: It is important to live a sustainable lifestyle, and that becomes even more critical in times of financial uncertainty.

The hope is that by hearing Vick's story, current and future players will be more sophisticated in managing their money going forward and avoiding the same pitfalls that landed both his entangled finances and public image.
