The name Bill Walton has become synonymous with basketball greatness. A Hall of Fame player whose imprint on the NBA was immense, they played in the one-of-a-kind center and powered championship teams like the Portland Trail Blazers and Boston Celtics. In addition to playing, Walton has left a lasting legacy as an announcer and sports commentator. Born on November 5, 1952, in La Mesa, California, Walton's career through basketball has seen its success and difficult times with numerous injuries that kept him out for most of his stellar career.

Walton's impact on that sport is profound, and his four sons went in the same direction, playing collegiately. Raised in a basketball-centric home, the Walton brothers drew inspiration from both their father's accomplishments and the paradigm surrounding the game itself. In this article, we will delve into the college basketball careers of each sibling, especially what they did to help Luke Walton reach the NBA.

College Basketball Paths Of The Walton Brothers

Adam Walton

The eldest son, Adam Walton, played College Basketball for LSU, then Pomona and Notre Dame de Namur. A college basketball junkie, he had little choice but to go all in during his collegiate experience, and a high-scoring career as an amateur followed it up. Adam was ready to hit the ground running after going to a Cajun powerhouse in college basketball. He went on to coach, taking his vast experience and love for the game that expanded beyond just basketball.

Nate Walton

The second-oldest, Nate Walton, Princeton University the team won three Ivy League championships. Nate graduated in 2001, and while he was never a star at Stanford, he had to live up to the legacy of being Bill Walton's son. After one season of professional basketball in France, Dimiceli pursued a business career and earned an MBA from Stanford University. Nate's tale is all too common for able athletes; it tells the story of an athlete who teeter-totters between pursuing his passion and facing reality after college basketball.

Chris Walton

Their youngest son, Chris Walton, played at San Diego State University (2001–2005). Nicknamed Tuffy, Chris was a college basketball fan unto himself. Having grown up as the youngest son in a family loaded with talented competing children, he had an interesting test embedded in front of him. Chris, after college, has pursued a career in real estate and is now an executive with Westar Associates in Newport Beach. His story demonstrates the different roads that can be created from a collective love for basketball.

Luke Walton

Luke Walton is the one in the NBA among his brothers. Luke, born on March 28, 1980, in Wisdom, was a standout baller for the University of Arizona and their coach, Lute Olson. His college career was successful, and in 1997, he competed as a freshman on the NCAA Championship team. Luke's perception of the court, basketball science, and duty to satisfaction captured the NEA inspecting beat.

Luke was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 2003 and played happily for ten seasons. His time in L.A. will be remembered most for helping the Lakers win NBA titles in 2009 and '10.

Following his playing career, Luke turned to coaching and made stops with the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, and Sacramento Kings. He beautifully wields his experience as a player in how he coaches and guides basketball's next-level talent.

The Weight of Legacy

Being the son of an NBA pro has its pros and cons. For the Walton boys, growing up meant feeling an obligation to their father's successes while also working towards making a name for themselves. Naturally, that duality is the same one Tennis and Burrow feel as they juggle demands from their fanbases, coaches, family members, and, of course, themselves.

Diverse Paths

Luke Walton made it to the NBA, but his siblings found success in other realms, a testament that there is no one path to happiness. Adam, Nate, and Chris have all gone on from professional basketball careers to demonstrate that the values of steamship, discipline, and resilience learned through sport are often carried over into a variety of other pursuits.

The Importance of Support

Family support is just as important to many young athletes in development. Bill Walton undoubtedly did a lot to encourage and guide his sons' pursuits, which begs the question of how important it can be for individuals who don't have positive influences around them when trying to overcome challenges in their lives.

Life Beyond Basketball

The Walton family's educational and self-improvement experiences are another homage. All three sons went on to college and careers beyond basketball, sending a message that sports are important but not the only path to accomplishment.
