There were a few weeks when the Alabama football program was marred with uncertainty. Nick Saban had just left and the Crimson Tide faithful did not know if their winning ways would continue. However, those doubts were relatively shushed when it was announced that Kalen DeBoer, Michael Penix Jr.’s mentor and former Washington Huskies head honcho, would take over.
Obviously, there are no results yet from Kalen DeBoer’s squad given that the Alabama football program has not started their season campaign. However, the members of the Crimson Tide already noted how different the system looks since Nick Saban left the squad to go into retirement. Malachi Moore, an incoming fifth-year player and the Crimson Tide’s reliable safety, outlined what the glaring changes have been.
“Coach Saban and Coach DeBoer, they have two different coaching styles. Both of them work and both of them are very effective, but like I said, they just have two different ways of going about it,” the Alabama football safety said, via Kaiden Smith of On 3 Sports.
Prior to joining the Alabama football program, DeBoer had already established himself as one of the greatest coaches in the nation by having a 104-win record and only losing 12 games. The Crimson Tide could have seen their future head honcho in action during the 2024 College Football Playoff Finals if not for a Michigan Wolverines squad that was on an absolute heater.
“Coach DeBoer is kind of more of a player-led type of coach, kind of lets his players take over and lead a team. When he has things to say, he definitely voices his opinion and lets it be known when things are on his mind,” Moore added.
Nick Saban and Kalen DeBoer are clearly very different when it comes to their coaching philosophies. It is worth noting that, for years, the Alabama football program had been focused on winning through defense because that was the philosophy that Saban preached. However, the program will take a complete 180-degree turn in their coming campaign because DeBoer banks his team’s success on their offensive schemes.
