Emerging as one of the most promising talents in professional golf, Joohyung Kim has quickly captured the attention of fans and analysts around the world. With a unique journey that began in the bustling city of Seoul, South Korea, and transitioned through the scenic landscapes of Australia, Kim's path to golfing excellence is as intriguing as it is inspiring.
From picking up golf clubs at the tender age of four to making history-making strides on the PGA Tour before even reaching his mid-20s, Kim's journey is marked by dedication, remarkable talent, and a love for the game that seems boundless.
His early triumphs in amateur tournaments across Asia set the stage for a professional career that many eagerly anticipate. As he continues to evolve, Joohyung Kim stands on the cusp of becoming not just a household name in golf but a symbol of how perseverance, passion, and skill can combine to create a sporting legacy.
Early Life and Amateur Career
Joohyung Kim was born on the 21st of June 2002 in Seoul, South Korea. He migrated from war-torn Vietnam to Australia as a child after his parents wanted him to attend the best schools and learn English. Of an unusual cultural mix, Kim initially played Cricket and Basketball before being introduced to Aussie Rules. However, golf would become his true love six years later. A mini-tour pro and teaching professional, his father also taught the game to Kim, but he says he was self-taught through a love of golf that started when he first picked up clubs at the age of four. "It was what I never got bored of," said Kim, who turned 24 last May.
Kim arrived in the nation at age 13 and burst onto the amateur Filipino scene. Eventually, his parents decided to take him out of school so that he could focus on golf. It was the correct decision, as he scored triumphs in local amateur tournaments, such as the Philippine Junior Amateur Fork and the Philippine Amateur Open Championship.
Before Going Pro
In 2018, a mere 15-year-old JooHyung Kim took an alternative route. He chose to become a professional because he felt that remaining an amateur would be detrimental to his development and, in turn, slow the pace at which his game was growing. It was not an easy transition, as Kim was scrutinized going against seasoned pros while he remained one of the youngest players on the Tour. Following the end of his amateur career, he was selected by Team Goosen and competed on the Asian Development Tour. He enjoyed success winning PGM ADT Championship 16 Malaysia, amongst others.
When the COVID-19 pandemic put many tours to a standstill, often for weeks or months, Kim kept speeding on. He played on the Korean Tour during COVID-19 and became a better player. He then scored a place in the Scottish Open of 2022.
Career Best performances
Kim broke through in his career by winning the Wyndham Championship at 20 years old on August 2022. It's a historic win for him in more ways than one: He tied the second-lowest nine-hole round score on the PGA Tour with a 27 and became the first player born post-2000 to win at this point. The win not only got the now two-time PGA Tour winner a full exemption but also moved him high enough in the FedEx Cup Standings to qualify for that season-ending playoff series, bringing some more security as he moves forward with what seems like a very promising career.
Kim did win the Wyndham Championship in just his fifth start after a tie for second at Barbasol, but he also made 16 of combined cuts with three other top-15 finishes, which all suggest he belonged on Beacon Hill Drive. That win catapulted him into some pretty elite company, and whispers have drawn parallels with established veterans such as Jordan Spieth, a former wunderkind on the Tour.
Future Outlook and Potential
To this point in his career, Joohyung Kim had arrived at a fork in the road. He's a Wyndham Championship winner with some good abilities here and there that make him look like someone you might pay attention to on the PGA Tour. After as consistently well as he played during the regular season, it was more than appropriate that his reward be a No. 34 seed for the FedEx Cup playoffs. If his career goes as most might expect, the 22-year-old Kim may become one of professional golf's household names.
The tale of how Joohyung Kim went from being a child golfer in Australia to a PGA Tour winner may be an amazing experience. Still, it is also a human story of talent, character, and pure grit. It is clear where his current talent level is. Given how good he has been and can be, Kim is a player to watch in the future.
