The UFC has officially announced that former lightweight champions Jiri Prochazka and Jamahal Hill will face off at UFC 311. This is a tremendous fight. Prochazka won the light heavyweight championship over Glover Teixeira at UFC 275, but he later vacated it due to a shoulder injury. Jamahal Hill won the vacant light heavyweight title at UFC 283 but vacated the belt seven months later due to a rupture in the Achilles tendon. Both men are coming off knockout losses to Alex Pereira in their last fight. Both men are former champions. This fight is guaranteed to be an awesome fight.
Islam Makachev and Arman Tsurykan are believed to be the main event for UFC 311. It is hard to imagine Prochazka and Hill are not the co-main event. I believe the UFC will be hard-pressed to book a more exciting fight for UFC 311.
Jiri Prochazka is every bit the entertainer we rightfully credit Michael Chandler for being. Prochazka may be the most unorthodox fighter on the UFC roster. He keeps his hands down and loads up on his shots from the hips. He has excellent footwork, switches stances well, chances levels effectively, and creates a lot of different angles. He also takes a lot of risks and is vulnerable to getting hit.
Jamahal Hill is a very athletic light heavyweight who can fight at a very fast pace, possesses knockout power, and, like Jiri, possesses excellent footwork. Injuries have been an issue for him throughout his career. Hill suffered an ACL rupture, an ACL, and two tears in his meniscus. When he enters the Octagon for UFC 311, Hill would have only 3 minutes and 11 seconds of time spent in the octagon in the last two years. That won't be easy to overcome.
Jamhal Hill has made it very clear that he intends to win a rematch with Alex Pereira after losing to the champion at UFC 300. How Hill has handled that loss has not done him any favors. He has given a lot of excuses about the referee, the knockout being a fluke, etc.
Still, Hill is a very good athlete and competitor, and this is a chance to get his career back on track. A win over Jiri Prochazka goes a long way in getting an opportunity to avenge a loss to Alex Pereira. It also further legitimizes his championship status. Hill won the vacant title at UFC 283 but did not beat the reigning champion, as Prochazka was forced to vacate. That will serve as motivation for Hill.
Jiri Prochazka also needs a win. After his UFC 303 loss to Alex Pereira, he stated "Only one thing goes on my mind: I need to evolve to the next level or don't fight again."
Both fighters have much on the line when facing off at UFC 311. Hill will talk a lot of trash and build up this fight. He will come in motivated and hungry. As for Prochazka, we know we are going to be entertained every time he steps foot in the octagon. Prochazka vs. Hill is a must-watch for fight fans and a great way to kick off the new year.
