MTV's wildly popular reality show "Jersey Shore" mesmerized us with its drunken drama and big personalities. Still, tensions aside and catchphrases away, the series also depicted some qualities around New Jersey immediately recognizable within our coastal communities. In this article, we take a closer look at the main filming locations that allowed Snooki, The Situation, and the rest of their entourage to become reality TV stars.
Heart of the Jersey Shore, Seaside Heights
The Beach and Boardwalk
Seaside Heights was the main site for filming all the first and many subsequent seasons. This lively beach town is the quintessential Jersey Shore experience, with sprawling sandy beaches and a bustling boardwalk.
More than three miles long, the beach is big on sunbathing, a staple scene in Baywatch and beach volleyball. The cast lounged on the sand, soaking up some sun and participating in beach volleyball games.
The most popular spot in Seaside Heights, however, is its famous coastal boardwalk. The boardwalk runs more than a mile and is packed with shops, arcades, and eateries. It is where all the action takes place, from casual strolls to tearful confrontations.
The Shore House
The Shore House (1209 Ocean Terrace) is arguably the most iconic location from the show. What follows is just the beginning; that undistinguished vacation rental will soon become a scene of drama and shenanigans involving nearly every cast member.
The house is your typical Jersey Shore vacation home. It is not overly luxurious but large enough to fit the big cast. Its location near the beach and boardwalk made it an ideal staging area for the show.
Fans can now rent the home as an authentic Jersey Shore experience. The home itself is almost unrecognizable from when MTV viewers met Snooki for the first time, and many features like that duck phone and Italian flag garage door are still there.
The T-Shirt Shop
The Shore Store was where most of the filming took place, given that most of the cast worked during their stay in Seaside Heights. This t-shirt shop was a hotbed for work drama and where you met the customers.
The store still operates today and is now a visitor attraction. Guests can buy Jersey Shore-themed t-shirts for $20 and have a chance to catch owner Danny Merk, who regularly appeared on the show.
6-Karma and Bamboo Bar Nightlife Central
Karma
It was a two-story club with a pretty big dance floor, several bars, and an area upstairs that opened to the outside rooftop. The cast would often awaken with their memorable "T-shirt time" tradition in the very room. However, it ended massively in 2018, with Karma shutting down due to legal issues. But its reputation endures in Jersey Shore infamy.
Bamboo Bar
Bamboo Bar was a regular hang-out for the cast, just down the street from Karma on 201 Boulevard. While Bamboo was often calmer than Karma, it still had its share of drama and WTF moments. Bamboo Bar closed not long after Karma.
The Boardwalk: Games, Rides & More
The Seaside Heights Boardwalk is not simply a boardwalk; it's an attraction all on its own. Throughout the series, we watch the cast enjoy different boardwalk attractions.
Casino Pier
Many episodes occur at Casino Pier, an amusement park on the boardwalk. The cast was regularly spotted on the roller coasters, at carnival games, and generally soaking up the festive vibe.
Unfortunately, Casino Pier was one area that suffered heavy damage during Hurricane Sandy. Much of it has since been rebuilt, and it remains a popular draw to Seaside Heights.
Arcade Games
Arcades in the many arcades of the boardwalk served as a backdrop for lighter scenes on TV. Skee-ball and other crane machine games were must-play diversions for the cast.
Other Notable Locations
The Keeper
It is a little further of a drive at 20 minutes north of Jenks Club in Point Pleasant Beach from Seaside Heights, but it is nice to go where you see featured as an alternative nightlife spot on the TV show. This massive club includes various bars, dance floors, and an outdoor portion with views of the sea.
Harrah's Atlantic City Pool
The Pool at Harrah's was a preferred landing spot for the cast when visiting Atlantic City. The music played in this indoor pool party setting was very different from what Hung and his friends had heard before.
Impact on the Jersey Shore
The show's popularity greatly affected the featured locations. After the show's debut, Seaside Heights became a hotspot for tourists interested in living it up like Jersey Shore cast members.
However, this swell wasn't always welcomed. Locals also lamented that tourists were behaving badly in attempts to mimic the behavior of Jersey Shore's cast. Also, the village had to address perceptions of how it became synonymous with a praying town to overshadow its family aspects.
Still, many of the businesses saw a silver lining in their newfound visibility. The Shore Store, in particular, benefited from the show's association by experiencing a much higher volume of orders.
The filming locations for Jersey Shore are more than just background to a reality TV show. They give you a glimpse into the unique culture and vibe inhabiting the New Jersey shore. The sun, the sand, or just being on holiday summer will never be complete without your mushy beach reads, so pack along any of these and let this read-alike list transport you to another world.
