In 2015, during a sparsely attended concert at the iconic Las Vegas Country Saloon, an unlikely love story between Bunnie XO and Jelly Roll originated. The performer Bunnie, whose real name is Bunnie DeFord, was there to watch the Moonshine Bandits perform that night. But she didn't realize that the opening act, a virtually unknown artist named Jelly Roll, would change her life.
When Jelly Roll took to the stage, Bunnie instantly felt drawn in. Even with the sparse audience, she remembers thinking: "What IS this? Who is this man? This big Southern boy."
The rest is history; fate just took it from there following the show. With so few people present, Bunnie made a move and went up to speak with Jelly Roll. Bunnie, though in a relationship at the time, gave Hamilton his number, and they caught up through mutual friends.
From Friendship to Romance
Upon their first encounter, a companionship began to sprout, one that would soon blossom into much more. Shortly after Bunnie's relationship ended, she took a leap of faith and messaged Jelly Roll. This was perfect timing, as Jelly Roll already planned a trip to Las Vegas, where he would shoot music video content.
On a whim, which would eventually be the basis of their relationship, Bunnie said Jelly Roll could stay with him for his visit. Having a tough time financially and living in his van, Jelly Roll took it. One seemingly simple act of kindness to completely turn their lives around and into a whirlwind love story.
A Whirlwind Wedding
There were early signs of how deep Bunnie and Jelly Roll's bond ran. In 2016, they had a wedding in one of those whirlwind romances. Jelly Roll publicly proposed to the woman of his dreams, Bunnie, on stage during a show in Las Vegas.
The pair, though, did not leave the train at this point. So it would shock everyone they knew, and most of all themselves, when Bunnie asked Jelly Roll to marry her that evening. They walked down the hall to a courthouse where they were married.
Making the spontaneous choice to marry each other perfectly sums up their intense bond, which is clearly anything but conventional. It's indicative of their willingness to ride in the unknown, which has served them well throughout this experience.
Overcoming the Hurdles of Step-Family Life
In addition to a spouse, when Bunnie married Jelly Roll, she became the momma of his daughter Bailee and son Noah from previous relationships. Bunnie was challenged in her new responsibilities and navigating the terrain of blending families.
Bunnie has always been candid about becoming a stepmom and previously spoke on her "Dumb Blonde" podcast. The mother of six has also been vocal about her dynamic with Bailee and the girl's biological mom, Felicia, stressing how vital communication is in co-parenting.
Pushing For One Another
One thing that never ceases to amaze me is how Bunnie and Jelly Roll support each other in their prospective professional ventures. While Jelly Roll has made a large career in his music, Bunnie, on the other hand, is proud of him and still supports him in his efforts to succeed in the industry.
Then, when Jelly Roll actually did win the CMA for New Artist of the Year in November 2023, Bunnie was there to celebrate with him. When Jelly Roll accepted his award, he thanked his wife for holding him down in a short speech: "My Lord and my wife. You changed my life, baby. I love you so much!"
Overcoming Adversity Together
Bunnie and Jelly Roll have endured the same trials plaguing any couple. The pair has been candid about a brief split in 2018 and how, while things may look perfect now, they've had their struggles. A lot of their time apart has helped the couple grow stronger, or so they say.
As a result, the Jelly Roll speaks about his public fight with addiction and interaction with the law, including two different terms in jail. Bunnie has been holding him down throughout this tough time, encouraging and rallying for some change on his part.
These storms have not loosened the bond between this couple. "'Cause it ain't been all Hallmark cards and Care Bears, but you know what, we persevered through each of those challenges to get where we are now," Jelly Roll told PEOPLE magazine.
August 2023 saw Bunnie rekindle her love for Jelly Roll, and the duo renewed their wedding vows in Las Vegas, at the same chapel they were married seven years ago. Now, Bunnie got the chance to wear that wedding dress she had skipped when they did get married at a courthouse.
In a social media post about his renewal ceremony, Jelly Roll wrote, "I may have never given my wife the wedding she truly deserved, but I plan on giving her the life she deserves for the rest of it. Mama, bear with me over everything. I will always love you. You are my anchor."
A Love Story for the Ages
They have traveled a journey together ever since, with varying ups and downs. However, it has also continued to scale new heights and further strengthen the relationship that they have held over time. Now, as they both coexist on their journeys to becoming the artists they were born to be, with Jelly Roll dominating the music industry and Bunnie serving up her heavenly harmonies, raising a family together, and planning for what lies ahead, it is inspiring that such an example of pure partnership can thrive in this world off unbalanced chaotic energy.
