One of history's most popular and long-lasting sports video game franchises is NBA 2K. The series was originally published by Sega Sports and is now published by NBA 2K sports. The first game in this line was a Dreamcast console exclusive. This early version of the game made way for a basketball simulation that continues to receive critical acclaim and lucrative success.
Visual Concepts and its Kush Games scripted division were acquired as part of Take-Two's $24 million purchase of Sega's sports game development assets in January 2005 from parent company Sumner Redstone-owned Viacom. The strategic maneuver helped Take-Two create the 2K publishing label, which would eventually house not only NBA 2K games but also other significant series titles such as Borderlands, Civilization, and BioShock.
For many years now, 2K Sports has been working with the National Basketball Association (NBA) to ensure it has all of the necessary game licensing and rights, complete with an authentic league recreation.
NBA 2K Key Developers
Since its inception, game development studio Visual Concepts has been the principal driving force behind all NBA 2K titles and continues in that role today. Founded in the San Francisco Bay Area, the company has been part of Take-Two Interactive since 2005, when it was acquired and is also currently under their sports publishing label, 2K Sports.
2K Sports has worked with various development studios to help bring the NBA 2K series to life over the years, in addition to Visual Concepts. These include:
- Kush Games—Also purchased in 2005 with Visual Concepts, Kush shares some responsibility for the NBA 2K series.
- Cat Daddy Games—This studio has been absorbed into 2K Play, which focuses on casual games and works mostly on mobile and companion app versions of NBA 2K.
- Hook Bang—2K acquired this studio in 2021 and rebranded it as Visual Concepts Austin. Based in Austin, Texas, it will enhance the NBA 2K development trajectory.
Thanks to Visual Concepts' continued support, as well as various timely partnerships and studio acquisitions over time, 2K Sports has been able to keep quality high and innovation fresh throughout its quarter-century history with NBA 2K.
NBA Licensing and Partnerships
2K Sports owes much of its success with the NBA 2K brand to some strong licensing and partnership deals between them, their series development team Visual Concepts, and the National Basketball Association GRPC. 2K has held an exclusive license to create NBA-oriented video games since 2005.
The agreement affords 2K Sports the right to use all NBA teams, players, arenas, and related branding within its games. It also enables the use of official NBA content, such as the actual status of real players and team data, along with some of the more popular existing features, such as MyCareer and MyLeague modes.
Beyond licensing, the NBA has also worked with 2K on multiple initiatives. For instance, in 2018, Microsoft teamed up with 2K to launch the 2K Foundations program to renovate all basketball courts in disadvantaged communities throughout the United States.
On the Whole
The NBA 2K series has maintained a high level of quality and consistency largely due to Visual Concepts' consistent involvement as the primary development studio, alongside some strategic partnerships and acquisitions by parent company Take-Two. Being the only franchise with an official NBA license has also been a boon, putting 2K in a particularly unique position to recreate teams, players, and branding.
