The world of gaming unceasingly evolves, bringing back beloved classics enhanced for the modern era, and "Persona 3 Reload" stands as a testament to this trend. Crafted as a remake of the original Persona 3, this title aims to reignite the passion of long-time fans while drawing in a new audience with its enriched content and gameplay mechanics. However, is it genuinely worth picking up? Let’s delve deeper.
Gameplay and Mechanics
In Persona 3 Reload, the core gameplay loop consists of dungeon crawling, Social Links, and turn-based combat with a complete day-night system. The system has been overhauled to be much more fluid in combat with elements from Persona 5, adding special chests, more powerful Theurgy attacks, and a baton-passing system. This changes how the game's labyrinthine Tartarus dungeon, its primary level, uses various design tricks to try and bait players into feeling invested in what they're up against.
Graphics and Presentation
Persona 3 Reload boasts modernized visuals, character designs, and cinematic cut scenes, creating a new aesthetic for the classic title. The audio, including voice acting and soundtrack, is improved overall and was received well. However, a few led to the most positive YouTuber overreactions so far. It is impressive how well Schiff puts together his music but lacks repeat value for him, as some have noted with their comments on tracks unchanged from 20 years ago.
Replayability and Content
The game has a lot of replay value, with different endings, quests, and post-game activities. Because of that total playtime, it will be a long and immersive experience for the players, with lots of content depth in case you really want to finish everything.
Compared to the Original Persona 3
Compared to the original title, there are several new features and improvements in Persona 3 Reload. Though the remake makes substantial gameplay and visual improvements, it is missing some of those features found in previous versions, such as choosing a female protagonist from Persona 3 Portable or "The Answer" from Persona 3 FES. All of this is to ensure the game can reach a wider audience while updating some already in-place mechanics, but certain adored aspects from long-time fans may have been stripped away as a result.
Persona 3 Reloaded gives us a decent-looking remake of the original game and houses some welcomed upgrades to gameplay and presentation. With the remake comes new mechanics and content that help enrich your overall experience regardless of whether you are a frequent visitor or new to this type of JRPG. That said, only some changes will appeal to everyone, and some fans might feel certain elements left out from previous releases may be a sticking point for now. Ultimately, whether or not it's worth picking up Persona 3 Reload comes down to a player's history with the original game and interest in new changes coming from this revitalization.
