History and sports often come together in big ways which allows for certain sports memorabilia to be created. Mark Jackson might be an unsuspecting player and now coach in the NBA but he holds one of the most expensive sports cards to date. It was not due to accolades or anything of the sort. Instead, the Menendez brother made it a little bit more special which caused a price surge.
Mark Jackson had one of the greatest IQs to have ever graced a basketball court. This is why he became a coach after his stints with teams like the New York Knicks and Indiana Pacers. But, this is not the reason as to why his 1990-91 NBA Hoops card has such an absurd value.
It was largely because Jackson had the Menendez brothers in the background of this card. Why were the two famous killers in this shot? Well, it was because they spent about $700,000 after taking their parents' lives. One of these big purchases were courtside tickets to see the Knicks in action at Madison Square Garden.
Stephan Zerance saw this card and immediately recognized the Menendez brothers on it: "My friend and I, who is also a true-crime head, knew that the brothers went on a lavish spending spree after they got an insurance payout from their parent’s death. They bought a lot of things: tennis lessons, Rolexes, clothes, businesses, restaurants, cars. Then we noticed they bought courtside tickets to the Knicks at Madison Square Garden.”
To this day, this card still holds a lot of value. The 1990-91 Mark Jackson NBA Hoops card is worth as much as $1,500 in prime condition. At the most minimum, it could be sold from the range of $8 to $500. There is nothing more clear than the fact that when history in sports combine, a lot of sought after memorabilia are made.
