Johnson graduated from Princeton University, finishing her career as the school's all-time saves leader (1,362) and becoming just the fifth goalie in NCAA history to amass 100 wins. She was a 19-time CWPA Defensive Player of the Week winner throughout her collegiate career.

Johnson launched her Olympic quest in 2016 when she became the first-ever African American woman to be named to the US Olympic Women's Water Polo Team.
