Yankees’ Trade Deadline Targets: Who Could Be on the Move?

Yankees’ Trade Deadline Targets: Who Could Be on the Move?

As the July 31 MLB Trade Deadline approaches, the New York Yankees are actively exploring ways to bolster their roster for a deep postseason run. With the team currently leading the American League East but facing challenges in key areas, particularly at third base and in the bullpen, front office executives are making calls and weighing options to address these needs. Here’s a look at the Yankees’ top trade deadline targets and what each could bring to the Bronx Bombers.

Third Base: The Primary Focus

The glaring issue for the Yankees has been third base. After moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to second base, manager Aaron Boone has indicated the team’s intention to acquire a more consistent and productive presence at the hot corner. Oswald Peraza, currently filling in at third, sports an OPS of just .487 and an OPS+ of 37, numbers far below what a contender needs at such a pivotal position.

Several third basemen have emerged as potential targets:

  • Ryan McMahon (Colorado Rockies): McMahon is a left-handed hitter with power potential, on track for his fifth consecutive 20-home run season. Despite a modest slugging percentage of .377 this year, his expected slugging of .443 and strong batted-ball metrics make him an intriguing fit for Yankee Stadium’s hitter-friendly environment. Defensively, McMahon ranks third-best among third basemen with 40 outs above average since 2021. Insider Jon Heyman noted, “They love him personally,” and the Yankees have reportedly “checked in” on him again this year.

  • Eugenio Suárez (Arizona Diamondbacks): Suárez has been scorching hot in 2025, slashing .254/.324/.564 with 28 home runs and 74 RBIs, ranking fourth and second in MLB respectively in those categories. While his defense at third is considered average, his offensive firepower could provide a much-needed boost. However, his price tag may be steep given his performance and contract status.

  • Nolan Arenado (St. Louis Cardinals): A perennial Gold Glove winner and offensive force, Arenado remains on the Yankees’ radar. Yet, concerns about his recent offensive trends and his hefty contract (around $42 million through 2027) make a deal complicated. According to reports, “Yankees higher-ups don’t love how he’s trending offensively.”

  • Ke’Bryan Hayes (Pittsburgh Pirates): Hayes offers excellent defense and a balanced offensive profile. The Yankees have a history of dealing with the Pirates, which could facilitate negotiations. Hayes’ age and skill set fit the Yankees’ desire for a long-term solution.

Pitching: Bolstering the Bullpen and Rotation

While the Yankees’ rotation has been surprisingly resilient despite injuries to Gerrit Cole and Clarke Schmidt, the bullpen remains an area of concern. The team’s 3.61 ERA ranks eighth in MLB, but depth and late-inning reliability are priorities.

Potential pitching targets include:

  • David Bednar (Pittsburgh Pirates): A dominant reliever with a high strikeout rate and effective slider, Bednar would add a high-leverage arm to the bullpen.

  • Kyle Finnegan (Washington Nationals): Known for inducing ground balls and limiting hard contact, Finnegan could provide depth and versatility.

  • Sandy Alcantara (Miami Marlins): Though a more expensive and ambitious target, Alcantara’s Cy Young pedigree and durability would be a game-changer for the rotation if the Yankees decide to pursue a frontline starter.

Other Infield Depth

The Yankees have also shown interest in former Yankee and Pirates infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who offers defensive versatility and contact hitting. His addition could provide insurance across the infield and improve bench depth.

Outlook

With the trade deadline looming, the Yankees face a balancing act between addressing immediate needs and managing payroll flexibility. The front office’s willingness to explore multiple avenues, from third base upgrades to bullpen reinforcements, signals a commitment to contending in 2025.

Manager Aaron Boone’s recent lineup adjustments, such as moving Chisholm back to second base, underscore the urgency to solidify third base. As Jon Heyman put it, “They are considering all options. They looked at [McMahon] last year. They love him personally.” Whether the Yankees land a marquee name like Suárez or a more cost-effective option remains to be seen.

In any case, the next few weeks promise to be active and pivotal for the Yankees’ playoff aspirations. Fans can expect a flurry of trade rumors and potential deals as New York aims to sharpen its roster for the stretch run.
