The Upton Brothers: A Tale of Two MLB Stars for Justin and B.J

Both brothers, Justin and BJ, born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia came from modest backgrounds as their father Melvin is a scout for the Kansas City Royals while their mother Yvonne serves as a teacher. The environment they were raised in provided the strong background of their work ethics and similarly, both started a successful career within Major League Baseball (MLB).

Childhood and early baseball success

Born on August 21, 1984, B.J. Upton, also known as Melvin Emanuel Upton Jr., began his journey in baseball at an early age. He attended Greenbrier Christian Academy in Chesapeake, Virginia, where he honed his skills and demonstrated exceptional talent on the field. His innate ability led to numerous accolades during his high school career, including being named a first-team All-American by Baseball America in 2002. Just a few years later, on August 25, 1987, Justin Irvin Upton was born, and much like his older brother, he exhibited an extraordinary aptitude for baseball from a young age. In 2005, he was selected first overall by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the MLB draft, marking the beginning of his professional baseball journey.

MLB Journey & Brotherly Bonds

B.J. Upton made his MLB debut on August 2, 2004, with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and went on to play for five different teams over a thirteen-year career (Tampa Bay Devil Rays /Ray, Atlanta Braves, Pittsburgh Pirates, San Diego Padres, Toronto Blue Jays). He and Justin are the only brothers in MLB history to be selected with the first and second picks of just about any draft.
On August 2, 2007, Justin Upton made his MLB Debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks. He had an impressive career boasting stints for the Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Angels, and Seattle Mariners. Simon has been chosen as an All-Star four times and twice (2007, 2014) won a Silver Slugger.
