San Francisco Giants Host Red Sox: Devers against his old team

On Friday night at Oracle Park, the San Francisco Giants hosted the Boston Red Sox in a highly anticipated matchup featuring one of baseball’s most talked-about players this season: Rafael Devers. Just five days after a blockbuster trade sent Devers from Boston to San Francisco, the three-time All-Star faced his former team for the first time. The game was charged with emotion, storylines, and a palpable sense of unfinished business.
Devers, who spent the first nine years of his MLB career with the Red Sox, was met with a warm ovation from the Oracle Park crowd before his first at-bat. Yet, despite the fanfare, the night proved challenging for the young slugger. Playing exclusively as a designated hitter, Devers went 0-for-5 against his old teammates in a 7-5 Giants loss. His lone highlight came in the third inning when he sent a deep fly ball to left-center field, only to be denied an extra-base hit by a spectacular catch from former teammate Ceddanne Rafaela.
The trade that brought Devers to San Francisco was born out of growing tension between the player and the Red Sox front office. After signing a record-setting 10-year, $313.5 million contract in 2023, Devers found himself at odds with Boston’s shifting roster plans. The Red Sox signed Gold Glove third baseman Alex Bregman in the offseason, prompting management to ask Devers to move from his natural third base position to designated hitter. Later, after first baseman Triston Casas suffered a season-ending knee injury, the Red Sox requested Devers to shift again this time to first base. Devers declined, stating, “I know I’m a ballplayer, but they can’t expect me to play every position”.
In San Francisco, however, Devers has embraced the transition to first base, practicing the position regularly and signaling a fresh start. “It’s been a long time… I feel happy. I’m relaxed now,” Devers admitted in a candid moment before the game, a stark contrast to the frustration he expressed during spring training in Boston.
Despite the rough night at the plate, Devers remains confident about his future with the Giants. His early numbers show promise he is 3-for-16 with one double in his first four games with San Francisco. The Giants’ front office and fans alike are optimistic that Devers’ power bat and veteran presence will bolster their lineup as they push toward the postseason.
The Red Sox, meanwhile, leaned on contributions from younger players like Ceddanne Rafaela, who had three hits including a tiebreaking homer in the sixth inning that helped Boston secure the win. The victory marked Boston’s eighth win in their last nine games, demonstrating the team’s resilience despite the loss of a franchise cornerstone.
Manager Bruce Bochy of the Giants expressed optimism about Devers’ adjustment period. “Rafael’s a great player, and he’s going to be a big part of what we do here. It’s a process, but he’s handling it well,” Bochy said.
For Devers, the game was less about revenge and more about moving forward. “That’s in the past,” he reiterated through an interpreter. “Those are decisions beyond my control, and I’m leaving that in the past right now”.
As the series continues, all eyes will remain on Devers to see how he adapts to his new role and whether he can help lead the Giants to success against his former team. The emotional weight of facing Boston is undeniable, but Devers appears focused on carving out a fresh chapter in San Francisco, one at-bat at a time.
