The Seattle Mariners surged late to secure a decisive 6-1 victory over the Houston Astros on Saturday night at T-Mobile Park, in a critical American League West matchup that could have significant playoff implications. Fueled by a balanced offensive attack and a standout pitching performance from Luis Castillo, the Mariners took control late and handed the division leaders their second consecutive loss.
Luis Castillo delivered a dominant outing on the mound, tossing 6 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and striking out seven while walking only one. His command and ability to neutralize the Astros' powerful lineup set the tone early. “It was about sticking to my mechanics and trusting my stuff,” Castillo said after the game. “Our guys gave me great run support, and that confidence carried me through.” Castillo’s fastball sat comfortably in the mid-90s, complemented by crisp breaking pitches that kept the Astros off balance.
Seattle’s offense came alive in the middle innings, turning a tight contest into a commanding lead. Randy Arozarena sparked the Mariners with a solo home run in the fourth inning the first of Seattle’s five runs scored from innings four through seven. Arozarena, continuing his offensive surge, finished with two hits and scored twice. “That homer really got the team going," Arozarena said. “We’ve been battling all year, and moments like this make a difference.”
In addition to Arozarena’s power, Cal Raleigh produced a multi-hit night, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, including a clutch double in the sixth inning that extended Seattle’s lead to 5-1. Julio Rodríguez also chipped in two hits and crossed the plate twice. Collectively, the Mariners tallied 11 hits, showcasing patient at-bats and timely aggression. Seattle drew five walks, consistently applying pressure on Houston’s pitching staff.
The Astros, who entered the game leading the AL West with a 56-40 record, struggled offensively against Castillo and the dependable Mariners bullpen. Jose Altuve managed a single but was effectively silenced otherwise by the Mariners’ pitching. Houston’s lone run came in the third inning on a base hit by Christian Walker, but it wasn’t nearly enough to keep pace. Astros manager Dusty Baker acknowledged the difficulty of the outing: “Castillo was sharp tonight. We just couldn’t find the clutch hits when we needed them.”
Seattle’s bullpen performed flawlessly behind Castillo, with Matt Brash and Andrés Muñoz shutting down the Astros over the final two innings. Closer Paul Sewald sealed the game with a perfect ninth, securing his 21st save of the season. “We knew the importance of this game,” said Sewald. “Every out counts when you’re fighting for position late in the year.”
This victory marked the Mariners’ third straight win and moves them closer to the Astros in the fiercely competitive AL West, narrowing the division gap to within five games. With 66 games left in the regular season, Seattle’s combination of pitching depth and offensive firepower gives them increasing hope for a postseason berth.
Looking ahead, the Mariners will aim to build on this momentum in their upcoming series against the Los Angeles Angels, while the Astros must regroup quickly for a rematch against the Texas Rangers. “These games are critical,” said Mariners manager Scott Servais. “We showed resilience and depth tonight, and that’s what playoff teams do.”
In a game defined by strategic pitching and timely hitting, Seattle’s 6-1 win over Houston not only reshapes the AL West landscape but also underscores the Mariners’ potential as a serious contender in the postseason race.
