Shohei Ohtani might be rising through the ranks and putting himself up to a challenger for the title of Greatest Baseball Player of All-Time but that nickname only belongs to one person for now. He goes by the name of Babe Ruth but other people have gone on to call him different things because of how much his name appears on headlines or resonates through air waves.
Babe Ruth has about more than 20 recorded nicknames on paper, radio, or recorded video. However, the greatest player to have ever touched a bat in the MLB has a short list of monikers that have been accepted by most.
The Great Bambino is surely at the top of everyone's list. Ruth was called this because of how much accolades he had collected at such a young age. But, the nickname took a sour turn when he transferred to the New York Yankees from the Boston Red Sox. This was a bad omen for the team in Massachusetts because they only won a single pennant in the next 40 years after the move.
People don't usually know that Babe Ruth isn't his actual name. He was born into this world as George Herman Ruth Jr. The moniker 'Babe' just stuck because of how good Jack Dunn treated him. They would often refer to him as Jack Dunn's Babe before eventually just calling him the one word that most baseball fans know of.
The only other nickname that stands out for this legend is The Sultan of Swat. Look, there is no other moniker that perfectly encapsulates how talented of a batter he was more than this. Ruth was able to notch 54 home runs throughout a single season. No one had done this before and being called this was definitely his biggest crowing achievement in terms of skill.
