The Arizona Diamondbacks continued their strong post-All-Star break surge with a resounding 10-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals Saturday night at Chase Field. This dominant win not only extended Arizona’s winning streak to three games but also reinforced their determination to climb back into the National League playoff race.
Eugenio Suárez was the standout performer, launching two towering home runs that marked his 32nd and 33rd of the season. Suárez’s bat came alive early as he crushed a two-run homer in the first inning and followed it up with a solo shot in the third, quickly turning the game into a rout. “I’ve been seeing the ball well lately, and it’s great to contribute like this,” Suárez said after the game. “Our team gave me great pitches to hit, and we played a complete game tonight.”
Suárez’s power at the plate has been a key component of the Diamondbacks’ resurgence this summer, as he leads the majors with 18 home runs since June 1. His ability to drive in runs with authority is making a significant impact on Arizona’s offense.
Corbin Carroll also played a crucial role in setting the tone offensively for the Diamondbacks. The speedy outfielder recorded two triples and crossed the plate three times, showcasing his combination of speed and power. “Corbin’s ability to get on base and create scoring opportunities adds a lot to our lineup,” manager Torey Lovullo noted. Carroll’s aggressive base running and consistent contact kept the Cardinals pitching staff on their heels throughout the evening.
Pitching was equally stellar for Arizona. Right-hander Ryne Nelson delivered a quality start, tossing six innings of one-run ball while allowing four hits and striking out four. Nelson’s efficient command, combined with timely defensive plays, helped keep the Cardinals off balance and prevented any sustained rallies. “Nelson’s performance was a big reason we stayed ahead,” Lovullo said. “He mixed his pitches well and kept their hitters guessing.”
The Cardinals struggled mightily against the Diamondbacks’ balanced attack. St. Louis starter Sonny Gray suffered a rough night, surrendering nine runs (eight earned) over just 3 1/3 innings on 11 hits. “We just couldn’t find answers for their pitching or hitting,” Gray commented. “Arizona’s offense was aggressive and capitalized on every mistake.”
Arizona showed consistency by scoring in each of the first four innings, building an insurmountable lead early. Geraldo Perdomo and Blaze Alexander both contributed RBI singles, while Christian Del Castillo added an RBI double in the fourth, further extending the lead to 9-0.
Despite a solo home run from Alec Burleson in the sixth for St. Louis, the Cardinals couldn’t mount any serious comeback. The Diamondbacks’ bullpen closed the game with three scoreless innings to preserve the lopsided lead.
With this win, Arizona improved to 49-50 on the season, narrowing the gap in the NL wild-card race. Their hot streak coupled with an offense that relentlessly applied pressure has injected new life into their postseason aspirations. “We’re not just playing to finish strong,” Lovullo asserted. “We want to make a statement down the stretch, and wins like this give us confidence.”
The Diamondbacks will look to continue their winning ways in the series finale Sunday against the Cardinals, where right-hander Merrill Kelly is expected to take the mound.
In a game defined by early offensive fireworks, outstanding starting pitching, and power hitting from Suárez and Carroll, Arizona’s 10-1 trouncing of St. Louis sends a clear message: the Diamondbacks are surging and determined to stay relevant in a crowded National League playoff hunt.
